Great guy! I love having him as a Rockets TV commentator...when did he start doing Rockets games? And how old is he? Also.....when did he start doing baseball Astros games?!?!?
he's okay as a Rockets commentator, but I don't like him at all during Astros games... I think he could be better if he actually had a color commentator to work with during Rockets games.
BILL WORRELL - Television analyst A 29-year veteran of the Houston sports scene, Bill Worrell is back for his 18th year as an analyst on Fox Sports Net's coverage of the Astros. He has also been the voice of the Houston Rockets since the 1986-87 season and has been the host of the Golf Texas series since the series deputed in 1995. Worrell has broadcast play-by-play for the Houston Oilers and college football, basketball and baseball. During his career, Worrell has covered numerous national sporting events, including the Super Bowl, the Kentucky Derby, the Indianapolis 500, the AFC Championship, the National League playoffs and the NCAA basketball tournament. He was the recipient of six "Best Sportscast" awards presented by UPI and the Texas Association of Broadcasters while he was sports director at KPRC radio. A civic leader as well as a broadcaster, he donates his time to numerous charities and organizations as master of ceremonies. Worrell has co-anchored telethons and worked on fundraising for the Olympic Fund Drive, the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and the local United Negro College Fund Drive.
I think Bill does a great job broadcasting the Rockets and, with Murph, we have the best 2 guys in the business. I'm just sorry I didn't get to see nearly as much of them as I wanted to on League Pass. Bill Worrell is a class act.
Aw, man. Calvin is a nice color man. If you can get past all of his "antics", he actually adds a lot of info to the broadcasts. The thing I like about both Bill and Calvin is that they are not homers (like a certain radio announcer). If the Rockets are playing bad, they aren't afraid to say so. They also acknowledge if someone on the other team is playing well instead of blamimg it all on the refs (unlike a certain radio announcer).
Im pretty sure Bill Worrell used to do play by play for the Rockets in the 1970's when the road games were shown on channel 39.
i had direct tv last season with the league pass thingee, so i wasn't able to see calvin and worrell that much. both of them are goofy as heck, but not near as goofy as the analyst for the timberwolves. i hate to talk bad about this guy also since he's a hall of famer and everything, but walt frazier... arghhhhh!!!! annoying. the guy uses words that shouldn't be used at the time and even makes up words half time time when he does the knicks games most of the time, i just put the tv on mute.
I love listening to Bill and Calvin during Rockets game, they're the best in the business. I don't think Bill gives the Rockets enough credit though. He talks like teams like the Mavs and Kings are way better than us, but we're as good as any (I really think the best) team in the league.
Bill and Calvin are amongst the best in the biz, IMHO. Bill is a great play-by-play guy, and Calvin is well Calvin, and we love him for it. I'd rate the up there along those guys in Atlanta, Seattle, Minnesota and Sac Town. The worst ones, IMO, are the commentators from New York, Boston, Utah.
Bill and Calvin have very good chemistry. The most boring commentator last year was by far Kareem Abdul Jabbar, if anyone saw last year's NCAA Tournament as closely as I did, then they will agree.
Does anyone else remember the days when McCoy McLemore and Tom Nissalke were Bill's color men?? Makes you appreciate Calvin that much more.
Yes and they both sucked. Tom Nissalke looked like Ted Turner and McCoy looked like Paul Silas. They were boring and uninsightful.
Seems like Calvin and Bill mesh well. Calvin is the emotional, extravagant, embellishing, color commentator. Bill is the voice of reason; a realist, play-by-play guy that keeps Calvin in check!
I just told my wife the other day that Bill Worrell has the greatest gig in town. Cover all Rocket games, and only broadcast the home Astro games. Sweet gig, man.
I think Worrell and Murphy are good for Rockets games, but I can't stand Worrell doing Astros games. Jim Deshaises is SOOO much better! I wish JD did the FOX games as well.
I agree with your description of Mychael Thompson (Wolves). Fortunately, for Wolves fans, Thompson is moving on to hosting a radio program in California (I think).
I was watching the Astros game last night, and a kid asked Bill if he liked the new logo, he said yes. He said that he was supposed to have picked up his new hat yesterday, but didn't, and that he would be wearing it tonight sometime during the Astros Broadcast.
