Beto knew he was going to run for the Senate and adopted the spanish nickname Beto. He was that smart before kindergarten...

That's nice, but can he beat Jimmy Kimmel in a skareboarding contest?

That's all well and good, but the reason his signs say "BETO" and not "O'Rourke" is because he wants to give the impression that he's something he's not.

Been picking small venues so he can report overflow capacity?

LOL, the cynicism... perhaps the result of trump's rallies? Or perhaps you are pulling our collective leg and typed this with a wink? ;)

I am sure Beto's campaign events would not draw enough to fill Reliant Stadium, but I'd guess the possible reason he chooses small venues... he seems to be running the "common man" type of campaign.

Ted Cruz, Beto O'Rourke use retail politics, town halls to woo voters in battleground of N. Texas

They say politics makes for strange bedfellows... "Eew" (actually, "not that there is anything wrong with that", but the image of its is making me queasy).

I like Beto just fine. I hope he wins. I'll be happy to be proven wrong but, yeah, I'm completely cynical about his chances.

Beto O’Rourke Could Be The Democrat Texas Has Been Waiting For

Beto O’Rourke is a prolific, prodigious sweater. We’re talking shirt-soaking, chin-dripping sweat, most visible as he takes questions from the audiences that have gathered to see him across Texas. When I first saw pictures of O’Rourke, the El Paso congressman currently vying for Ted Cruz’s Senate seat, soaking through his blue dress shirt at the Houston Juneteenth Parade, I thought: This is the most Texas thing I’ve ever seen.

It’s increasingly become a Beto Thing. On the campaign trail, Bernie had his disheveled hair, Trump had chants of “Lock Her Up,” and O’Rourke has his sweat-drenched button-down shirts. Most politicians would mask the sweat with suit jackets, but O’Rourke, who’s already audacious enough to think he could become the first Democrat to represent Texas in the Senate in over 25 years, poses for hundreds of selfies looking like he just got pushed into a pool. On a Sunday morning at the Hill Country Veterans Center in Kerrville — a town of around 20,000 in Texas Hill Country, and the first of three stops for the day — there are 600 people’s body heat to outstrip the air conditioning. Ten minutes after O’Rourke takes the stage, the first signs of sweat start expanding like continents on the back of his shirt.

Rather than recoiling, his supporters see it as a badge of honor — proof of how relentlessly he’s campaigning to win over every voter in the second-largest state in the union. “You’ve got to work to sweat!” one captioned a photo on Instagram. “Ted Cruz don’t sweat like Beto does!”

Long article. Read the rest at the link...

Let's hope he's smart enough to remind folks of those dirty tactics used by Cruz and Trump against each other to highlight the dirty hypocrisy.

I hope Cruz wins but it's a hailmary at this point. But hey he's in the game so it's not all that bad, he's given himself a chance. And his biggest chance is that Texans mostly don't vote. If he can erode even a tiny % of the apathy and make those folks vote then he could have his own hailmary miracle.

I don't think inviting folks to an Central West Texas highschool football stadium on a Thursday afternoon is a good idea if you want folks on your side.

It's not bullshit, even if it was his nickname since childhood that doesn't explain why he's going with "BETO for Senate" rather than "O'Rourke for Senate"

You can pretend you don't understand why he is going that route, but deep down I'm sure you know that he's trying to put forward the idea that he's something he's not.

C'mon man, it's his nickname since day one bro. You gonna tell another man he can't use the nickname he's been using his whole life however he wants?!? It's not your place and frankly it's rude.

Also, B E T O (both a name AND logo-ish) from a marketing perspective is very clean and symmetrical which goes a long way in impacting folks psychologically in a pleasing and memorable way. Why you think Apple uses a damn apple for a logo instead of their name Apple Inc. Every major, popular, brand (that's what Beto is trying to build) has a catchy and concise name/logo. You;re just hating bro but got no substance so grasping at straws.

    -edit-

i had to add the ridiculousness of your views is that Cruz also uses C R U Z because yea it's his name but because it also looks and sounds good.

Btw... Ted isn't his name it's Rafael Edward Cruz. You gonna open a thread about Rafael (hispanic sounding) using Ted (white) and whitewashing himself? You should because that's actually pathetic.

Well, not since day one, he allegedly got the nickname in kindergarten, but close enough. I'm not saying that he can't go by his nickname, but he's basing his entire candidacy on his nickname because of the false impression it gives people. You can pretend that's not the case, but it clearly is. When you want to court Hispanic voters....and he very much does, it's much better to do so as "Beto" than as "O'Rourke".

When a politician runs on a nickname, it's always a gimmick, just like it was the last time someone ran for a major office in Texas with marketing centered around a nickname, Kinky Friedman. Beto will get more support than the Kinky gimmick, but the result will be the same.
