wtf is wrong w/ yall! the correct answer is ISIS! "i married isis on the 5th day of may, but i could not hold on to her very long, so i cut off a-my hair and i rode straight away, for the wild unknown country where i could not go wrong" honorable mentions: tombstone blues sugar baby tangled up in blue (heck, every song on blood on the tracks) visions of johanna
I was pleasantly surprised to see these 10 great songs listed instead of the usual top 10 hits. They are all great songs. I voted Idiot Wind but I could have voted for any of them.
Kind of a strange list of "Best Dylan Songs". By ommiting critically acclaimed songs that moved a generation like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Like a Rolling Stone", makes this a second tier list. Its like having a "best ice cream" list and leaving out chocolate and vanilla. Why bother?
This list clearly comes from a Dylan fan. Dylan's "top 10" songs hardly even resonate for me anymore. The difference between this list and a list of anthems is that these are the sorts of songs that transcend the idea of "moving a generation" by instead moving an individual. My favorite Dylan song (and there is no bigger fan than I) is "Nobody 'Cept You." It's not even on any of his albums. It was an outtake from Planet Waves. It's not my favorite because it's obscure of because it's not played out; it's my favorite because it, even more than all the others that do the same, cuts straight through to my soul. No world-changing song has the power to do that.
Agreed with everything you said except for the first sentence. He knows who Dylan is and is trying to impress someone here (maybe me but I don't care) but his list would have been even more impressive if he had "Blind Willie McTell" and "She's Your Lover Now" on it.
I don't agree those songs would have made his list more impressive and I didn't get the idea at all that he was trying to make it impressive anyway. Adding those two songs would only prove that he had heard the Bootleg Series (1-3). His list is thoughtful and eclectic. I don't know the history between the two of you but that song selection seems to me to be one from an honest to goodness Dylan fan and not someone who just 'knows who Dylan is.' Maybe your history is such that your posts here make sense, but I am baffled as to why you'd take this thread as the OP trying to impress you or anyone. If so, what a weird thing to do. If not, what a weird thing to think.
Uh, read post #6. He comes across as an alter ego of FFB but one that tries to be a music snob. Some might say the same about me but I am just a guy that has a ****load of music and now a ****load of time on my hands. But there have been other encounters, so no offense, dude, but you don't know the whole history here. He acts the same way, maybe worse, to moes.
