Damn, I miss Soulhat shows. Frosty is a badass and a hell of a nice guy. I got a chance to meet him in Corpus after one of their shows. His son ain't a bad drummer either. I caught one of the shows they played last year at Antone's. They had JJ Johnson on the drums. That guy can freaking play, too.
Thank you mc mark, I knew I could count on you! Zappa had some great drummers: Vinnie Colaiuta was incredible and Bozzio was a beast.
Don't know much about drumming and admit I've never heard of most of the names mentioned in this thread, but I've always liked Mike Portnoy.
Check out craigslist, and you'll likely find a drummer hard up for cash, and looking to sell his whole rig for 400-600 bucks.
I can't believe this is the first Portnoy mention. He's a big influence on a lot of the younger drummers I have come across. Also, I would like to mention Topper Headon of The Clash. He was such a fantastic drummer. Listen to "Train in Vain", "(White Man) in Hammersmith Palais" and "Rock the Casbah".
very good drummer - im a big fan of that rhythm section and the jamaican influence they had - the clash definitely wasnt like most punk bands they got lumped in with in that they were all individually really good musicians. have you heard the good, the bad and the queen? paul simonon plays bass, tony allen on drums, the blur singer and the verve guitarist - good stuff. has anyone ever heard of susie ibarra from nyc. i saw her live a few years ago and it was one of the most amazing displays of drumitude i have ever seen. some clips of her playing... http://www.vicfirth.com/artists/ibarra.html
Is that the same Frosty (Bartholomew Eugene Smith-Frost} that played with Lee Michaels? This song (no video) is just two guys, Lee is playing the bass line with his feet. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Xtuth2jeTF0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Xtuth2jeTF0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Another drummer not mentioned yet that I really like and respect is Steve Jordan. Dude has worked with so many greats...
Hol. Lee. Jesus. That's one of the funniest videos I've ever seen. I can't believe I missed it the first time around. I've watched it 4 times today!
chris adler. some say he uses the bell on the ride too much. i like it though. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hd9x28gA_zQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hd9x28gA_zQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> jason bittner <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bgiZ4bMWgt4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bgiZ4bMWgt4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> john dolmayan <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0clo5Pwtjso"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0clo5Pwtjso" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> shannon larkin <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/alfCsUACK0I"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/alfCsUACK0I" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> and lastly, lars <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BFlnXeo4mKQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BFlnXeo4mKQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> i don't wan to forget the already mentioned: alex van halen keith moon stewart copeland john bonham mick fleetwood travis barker danny carrey
He was the drummer on Neil Young's "Landing On Water" album. That album is considered to probably be the worst Neil album ever, but I find myself listening to it more than many of his other albums. Some great tracks exist on it such as "Hippie Dream" and "Touch the Night". Jordan's drumming is very powerful (probably too much) but that album sucked because the quality of the songs that Neil brought with him weren't that good.
My vote goes to Danny Carrey <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MSJXV0ZJ4JQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MSJXV0ZJ4JQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Lots of good 'uns listed in here. I really like Tomas Haake: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hJEh0piBSqk"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hJEh0piBSqk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Nobody can funk it up like Johnny Blackwell. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/avjo3-Vg33U"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/avjo3-Vg33U" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Watching this guy play makes me want to just ****ing quit.
Man, I'm so old...or old world. (I know, present drummers, but then I wouldn't be able to add anything) Whoever was the drummer for Rare Earth was my favorite back then. Also, I like drummers where I can still remember the beat like: In-a-gadda-da-vida Yeah man! We rocked back then.
This conversation begins and ends with Roy Haynes. All these other drummers you people mention are mere mortals, not worthy of tying Roy's shoelaces. Roy is 82 years old and is STILL the greatest drummer the world has ever seen, bar none. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1xb2hscHFts"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1xb2hscHFts" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Haynes solo starts around the 5:00 mark.
