#1 defeats #2 easily.... this ain't no BCS/college football with random teams in the Top 10 every week and getting beat the next week by an unranked team :

In terms of impact? I'd go with John Bonham.

In terms of pure skill? Peart definitely. Listening to some of Rush's songs, it's amazing to hear the presence of the drums in their music. Surprised no one has mentioned the one-armed Def Leppard drummer yet. Saw that guy live when they came to town, and they put on a pretty good show.

I am not that big of a follower of the drummers, but Michael Shrieve on Soul Sacrifice is some of the best drumming I've heard.

Also, I really like the drummer in The Los lonely Boys. He plays really strong.

the thread said "best drummer alive today" yet i keep seeing Bonham and Keith Moon thrown around..

speaking of Steely Dan, I'm going with their current touring drummer Keith Carlock from UNT... he was Sting's last touring drummer before the Police reunion as well

    Since the question is:

Buddy Rich does not count. He died in 1987.

John Bonham is alive in the music, so I'm gonna go with him. :p

If you got have a living guy though... I like Dave Grohl and the drummer from System of a Down.
