rofl . . . If any of y'all ever make it to Pittsburgh, you should check out The Church Brew Works -- great microbrewery in a really unique setting.
The best beer in the world is Lindeman's Lambic (partial to the Rasberry myself). $4 for one 12oz at discount though. They bare little relation to cheaper flavored wheat beers--I know of nothing even close in American Microbrews. In the summer I like a clean lager, Pilsner Urquel is prime. But for a lower price the Canadian Lagers (Labatte Blue, Molson Golden, Moosehead) are not far behind. I have been getting Moosehead lately for $10 a 12 pack. Occasionally I'll get wheat + lemon. In the winter I get darker ones. Examples include Paulaner Octoberfest and Youngs Outmeal Stout. OTHER RANDOM SELECTIONS Stone has a special IPA unique in taste and a kick to it. In Mexico can't go wrong with Dos Equis (red one, Amber I think they call it) or Negro Modelo. Always liked Newcastle and Bass. I also like Sam Adams variety packs, Sierra Nevada and Anchor steam among other American beers. Finally, nobody, but nobody, beats Natural Light.
I had some Moosehead in Austin once about 11 years ago and I haven't been able to find any since. That stuff will knock you out.
Man - some of you guys drink some nasty stuff. I go for more the normal stuff like Corona (with lime of course), Sam Adams, Amber Bock, Michelob Lite. I've tried some of those snob beers and after 1 sip I'm trying to find a good planter to empty it in. Worst beer ever - Eidlewhile (sp) - $1.49 for an 8 pack of 12 oz in 1980 (followed closely by Black Label and Old Milwaulke or Milwaulke's Best). You'd see people at a BYOB bring that stuff in and 2 minutes later they'd have a Michelob in their hand - uh excuse me...I don't think so...
I'm huge fan of the Full Sail beers. Arrogant b*stard Ale is a good one too. I also like Rasputin Imperial Stout and any of the IPAs Dogfish Head brewery puts out. Their 120 minute is a knockout.
we have similar tastes, i see.... i'd throw in st. arnolds lawnmower, scrimshaw, and delerium on mine as well. sure you've been to the draught house on 42nd and medical.... love going in there and trying new beers. sierra nevadas torpedo was a pretty tasty one they had this summer. they have an autum seasonal beer that my buddy bought last time we were there that was delicious, but i cant remember the name for the life of me. st. bernadus(sp?) and practically the rest of the belgian breweries have beer making down to an art form... definitely my favorites. love being able to buy la fin du monde at whole foods for 6.49 :drool
Ayinger Oktoberfest Warsteiner Spaten Bass Guinness Kirin Ichiban Straub Fosters (only ice cold) Carlsberg Heh...most of mine don't even rank: http://www.mensjournal.com/feature/0507/bestBeer_world.html Guinness and Ayinger (Weisse...but I can't stand white beer) are there, but that's it. I've never heard of most of these: http://www.ratebeer.com/Ratings/Ratings-Top50.asp
Townhall isn't too far from where I live and been there a few times. For anyone who find themselves in Minneapolis its pretty easy to get to its a block away from the U of MN law school and on the other side of the freeway from the Metrodome next to the Metrodome Holiday Inn. Always a good place to stop for a beer. The Twin Cities are big on Microbrews and there are several. My favorite is a place called Barley Johns in the Northern Suburbs which brews a great wild rice ale.
As far as favorite beers for mass produced beers its Shiner Bock (I was so glad to finally get it outside of Texas) and Guinness. For regional beers I like Henry Weinhards on the West Coast and Summit in the Upper Midwest. There's a bunch of microbrew beers too that I like. For the worst beers the absolute worst I've ever had is something called Bergermeister closely followed by their light beer Bergie Lite. This stuff was so awful that they used it to haze my pledge class in college. I've never seen it outside of the Bay Area so I don't know how widely distributed it is and hopefully for everyone it isn't widely distrubuted. The other awful beer I've had was Bell's Cherry Stout which comes from a more upscale brewery that generally produces good stuff. I highly recommend avoiding the Cherry Stout as it has an awful salty aftertaste. OTOH though I poured about half a bottle into a beef stew I was cooking and it added a lot to it. So cherry stout good for cooking but not drinking.
damn, that stuff is beyond good, one of the wonders of the world. i buy a few of the big bottles of the rasberry when i have friends over for a bbq. it's very sweet and i wouldn't drink glass after glass of it but as an "after dinner beer", i can't think of anything that can touch it. yu-u-u-u-ummy. here's a great place for obscure beers for you new yorkers who may not know of it, or anyone visiting the hipster capital of the universe(billyburg): http://www.spuytenduyvilnyc.com/reviews.htm
The 2 best kinds: col'beer & freebeer. Rimbaud: agreed on Leffe at the G-man, damn shame. Probably my favorite beer. Only Japanese beer worth drinking is Asahi Black - dark, hints of coffee - just delicious stuff. Unfortunately it's $12/6-pack in stores. pgabs, go to the Flying Saucer, G-man. Sit at the bar & just try the different beers (best to do when it's not crazy crowded). Pick 2 or 3 and ask for tasters, then order a pint of whatever you like. Best way to find new goodness.
