Back in those days, there was a war between the broke-ass warez freaks and the guys/companies that shelled out money for "upper echelon" BBS software. People that ran boards using Worldcomm and Wildcat! were frowned upon because it cost a lot of money to buy their software -- money the kiddies usually didn't have. If I remember correctly Worldcomm came in modules for this, that, and everything else. They made their money by selling the modules. I could be completely wrong about that, though, since it's been about a decade since I logged onto a BBS.

The people that were looking to run warez boards ran T.A.G. (free), Renegade (an offshoot/hack of T.A.G. from what I recall and it was free), Oblivion (which may also have been a T.A.G. hack), etc.

I remember when I shelled out the money for my Wildcat! board (I think it took most of a paycheck), all my friends thought I was nuts because it wasn't configurable. They were absolutely wrong. It was configurable, but nobody ever did customize it because companies just did the "default" install and hoped it ran. Once customized, it was awesome because you could write your own modules using wcCODE without worrying about royalties or anything.

LOL! This thread is hilarious. Small world indeed. Man, I only met Mike once or twice, but he had to be one of the nicest guys I ever met.

The handle I used the most was Telegan (named after an old Bard's Tale PC RPG character). I think I used Sir Cut early on. I don't even remember any of my other handles.

I tried to find an old Atomic Cafe Houston BBS List but have not been successful. I just wanted to see if I remember some of the old BBS names...

Oh, and I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Tradewars as a door they played. Remember that one? [IMG]

I came in pretty late on the BBS scene. I had just gotten my first computer and i eventually dialed up to Cloud 9 and downloaded my first file. I was pretty estatic, considering this was when i was first getting into computers. Downloading back then was not a simple 'click' and download. No Winzip either, much less windows.
I remember the Atomic Cafe, never went there though. I had just started playin trade wars just before the i-net (AOL) kicked off. My handle was Midnite Marauder (i was one of those poor kids back then that hung out on the warez boards)

its all good and fun till someone gets hurt ... then its absolutely hilarious!
