I tried Cisholm trail, it's not that good, the big lure is that it's cheap compared to the other places . You can get a bunch of sides items. DoD, do you order the lean or the extra moist brisket (aka extra fatty)? I never order the lean.
The Rudys in Austin are better than the ones in the Houston area for some reason. Still gotta go everytime I go to Austin.
It's a pain to get to, but if you ever get the chance, go. The brisket is just ridiculous. Snow's brisket is to Lockhart brisket as Lockhart brisket is to chain Austin BBQ brisket. Snow's is incredible. Too bad it's only open Saturday mornings and takes a long while to get to.
thank you - some might call this kind of talk blasphemous, but damnit...it needed to be said! salt lick isnt bad, but its way overrated. to the threadstarter - if you are hanging out in central austin than go to stubbs - pok e' jo's is a chain, but its pretty good too - i probably eat there more than any other bbq joint (its close to my house). austin has a reputation for being some kind of bbq mecca (insert 'live music capital of the world' joke here), but thats really not the case - all the great ones are at least 30 minutes outside of town. YES!!! if you have a car and you really want the central texas bbq experience than do what major says - mueller's is in taylor - there is another one next door called mikeska's, but mueller is better. pop your head into mikeska's though - its like stepping back in time 50 years. my personal favorite is blacks in lockhart - killer pork ribs (not beef...pork) - brisket and sauce are also top-notch. kreutz is more famous and popular, but the one time i went there i made the mistake of asking for sauce - the lady there kind of yelled at me so i never went back.
I've tried both. But I've had varying degrees of bad brisket there no matter which I've tried. I'd say about 75% of the time, it's been average-to-good, but the times it's been bad, it's like gnawing on burnt wood or leather. I have to admit that when it's been good, it's been pretty good. Their ribs I've had much better luck with, though.
Iron Works. Best barbeque I've ever had in my life, and it's not even close. They say Jay Leno has them ship BBQ meat to him in LA from there.
Yes, I love Lamberts too, I know it's considered an upscale place, but the service and food has been excellent. The sauces are great too.
hmmm...i didn't realize that. i used to stop and eat there as a kid when i'd visit my sister in college at SWT. but it's been awhile. i do like the food at the one that ripped off the name in houston, though! but in all honesty...i'm addicted to the crack they put in the jalapeno cheese bread at Goode Co. that alone brings me back there over and over.
Head to Round Mountain Saturday afternoon, turn on CR307 & follow your nose. Brisket, wild boar hindquarter, pork ribs, cabrito, tri-tip sirloin, homemade venison sausage, quail, stuffed jalapenos, cold beer & ritas....It's going to be a looooong day, can't wait.
a beautiful girl doesnt need a nice rack, but it always helps. would you agree that most bbq restaurants provide sauce? if your restaurant chooses not to serve it thats cool, but dont yell at people who ask for it. blacks has sauce and its excellent!
exactly! the only time in my life that i have ever felt my texan-ness called into question was when i asked for bbq sauce at kruetz's.
people always say good bbq doesn't need sauce but i'll be damned if a good sauce doesn't take the bbq to the next level. even if you don't put it on your meat, i always throw the good stuff in my beans and ALWAYS love to soak it up with the bread. f' the haters
