my aspirations were once high...but after being convinced that ivy league schools were easy and affordable, i looked it up...i have been accepted into ivies w/ money, the thing is...i don't want to leave to go that far....maybe for med school (is emory a good medical school?)

i applied to plan 2 (still haven't heard back), and if i don't get in, i dont feel that UT doesn't offer me much compared to the other 10000 freshmen...

i just discovered that baylor had all my options, but i rarely hear ppl talking about how good of a school baylor is until i made this thread....

so sorry..im just gathering advice and experiences from here b/c others at school cant help me...if you don't have anything helpful to say, just dont say it...im 16...cut me some slack...

He's 16, looking for advice and seems confused. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt in terms of bragging. Besides, what the hell is he bragging about? Besides coming in #2 in high school, he has yet to try or even accomplish succeeding in an academically rigorous university, study for and take the MCATs and then go through the application an interview process for Med School.

Dude, take it from a guy who is heading to BCM this fall, If you can succeed in maintaining a good/high GPA, doing plenty of community service, complete summer research programs (A major plus), attain a 32+ on the MCATs and show a genuine interest and desire to want to be a physician in your app/interview, it won't matter if you go to Baylor, UT, A&M or wherever. You will get in where you want to. Going to Rice, however, will catapult you.

I would strongly recommend applying for the Baylor-Baylor or Rice-Baylor programs. A student of your caliber and obvious dedication to the medical profession should seriously consider it. Besides, if you decide you want to apply out, you can always change your mind and do what you wish.

What I am trying to say is, do NOT underestimate the level of education Southwestern or BCM can provide you. Trust me, having the peace-of-mind that you are on a track like Rice-Baylor is something you CANNOT put a price tag on.

The bottom line is, ask yourself first whether you want to go to the university and then ask whether it is good for academics, pre-med, etc.

Good luck and I hope to see a thread in 3 yrs (or less!) asking whether Exam Krackers or Kaplan is better for MCAT prep!

Quick question, If you got into Ivy League schools, why is Rice not an option? It seems to fit the bill for every one of your requirements: close to home, academically rigorous, immense research opportunities, engaging campus life, track-record of sending students to great med schools across the nation, etc.

    What gives?

so let me get this straight, you got into an Ivy league school and yet you're sweating balls over getting accepted to UT's plan II .. hmmm

and shasta, you're right about GPA/MCATs being the main determinant of medical school future, but grouping Baylor with UT and A&M isn't really accurate.. Baylor and UH and Texas Tech etc, maybe, but UT and A&M are tier I public schools.. Rice is in a class on its own (the Ivy of the south).. but if med schools had a choice between between a UT/A&M grad and a Baylor grad with 3.8, 33 on MCAT students and similar extracurricular involvements, I'm willing to bet that they'll go for the Tier I'er, just like they'd go for the Rice grad if it was a UT/A&M vs. Rice choice

Your options are limited if you don't want to leave. In terms of overall experience (includes academics and social) UT is better than Baylor. Most majors at UT are better than the same ones at Baylor.

I know this doesn't affect you wanting to stay close to home, but doesn't Cornell have the option to attend a local community college for 2 years and if you have a 3.5 GPA you are automatically admitted into the university? That would solve your money issue. I think the community college has to be near the university itself, it would be sweet if you could go to any local one in town and leave after two years.

From what I've read in the past, your undergrad school isn't that important for getting into med school. Just do well, rock the MCAT, and you have a shot.

Also a plus for Waco: The Gut Pak. It's basically heaven in a styrofoam box...though I don't know your religion since if I recall you're Indian and most of my Indian friends are Hindi and can't eat meat.

How are the teachers at there? I am considering transferring back to a school in Texas. I currently go to Colorado, but the liberal extremist professors here are driving me ****ing nuts. I realize a lot of teachers anywhere are gonna be liberal, but I have poly sci teachers preaching socialism.

That's on their Prospective Students homepage...

...Yes the guaranteed acceptance programs deadlines have passed. Here is a list of the programs and their associated schools:

Alright man, here are your options now. Go to a tier 1 school, work hard, summer research, volunteer, MCATs, apps/interview. Or you can bust your arse and go for the JAMP program. It is pretty selective and you apply for it during your freshman yr of college. It'll give you guaranteed acceptance to a Texas Med school (you must work hella hard to get BCM or Southwestern). However, you can always get out of it if you wish. Consider it a safety net.

I know you won't listen to me but, relax. You are on the right track. You should be proud of your accomplishments. You will be doctor.

This is the ideal program for you if financing your education is a problem and you are a hard worker/good student.

Btw, for future reference, I found the info for you AND I gave you a link. The least you could do is not appear to be an idiot and click on it. I know you are 16, but gawd...
