So will you complain if we lose him after 2 years and he contributes to another team when he is actually ready??? Or is having proper training more important than being able to actually contribute........?
If he sat on the bench LAST year for the Rockets, this wouldn't be a problem. Still, why would anyone try to snatch him away from us if he's benched so badly? No one will have seen him. If he plays enough for people to judge, then why would he leave? We're giving him minutes.
It would be even more of a problem, cause instead of 2 years left to prove himself, he would only have 1. Yet, you run the risk of someone taking a chance on him. Especially if he gets to the age where he comes around as a player. Youre assuming he wouldn't leave though. JVG has a tight rotation. One that doesn't give much of an opportunity for rookies to get their foot in the door (even more of a reason to wait to sign him). Who says he would even get minutes??? I would rather have him keep playing overseas and get the in game experience, which is better than just sitting on the end of the bench and contributing garbage mins a couple of times a month. That way, when we do sign him to his 2 year deal, hell be more ready to contribute.
According to JVG, the PF's are Howard, MoT, Spoon and Padgett. I really have to laugh. I just hope that EG and BAD are serious considerations. To me those six players are the pool we at least should be working with to man the PF spot and help at the 5. When you see how much money Foyle is getting, we know how critical it is to get those youngsters, who are available cheaply, securely in the fold.
Holy Cow where the heck did you get that info from? Darko is suppose to have talent just oozing out of him. Scouts are still anticipating him turning into a beast. I don't think anyone has Malicks ceiling anywhere as close to Darko's. Not to say that it can't happen but damn that statement came out of nowhere.
The chance is much greater for us to know if Badman is NBA material in three years than it is for him to become a scrub and make a comeback. What's the chance of scrubs making a comeback after playing 3 years and getting cut? Malick should've been here last year. When Cato was out we had no defense and size except Yao in the middle. Playing MoT and Spoon at backup C and pf killed us on defense. The same thing can happen this year to Yao's back up and we need a third string center as insurance. MoT, Howard, Spoon and Padgett aren't going to cut it at backup C. Assuming Malick can bulk up enough, he can be had very cheap, under one mil a year. If we are going to get a third string back up center who normally wouldn't be any good at such price why not give it to Malick? A three year deal with a team option in the third year sounds Ok. At least he'd get a chance to really develop. JVG playing a tight rotation wouldn't be a great problem. There will be minutes at the backup spot and second round rookies often have to compete against veteran backup for minutes anyway. It's also about match ups. JVG isn't Larry Brown in that Nachbar cracked into rotation under him. Malick will likely become a JVG's guy as long as he plays defense and hustles. Something that seem to be his strong points.
Agreed. If he's not getting minutes in Germany, at least he could not be getting minutes in Houston where he could learn from spending time with the best of the best.
I think its better for him to sit on the bench here in case we need him rather than stay in Germany. I'm pretty sure he'd be of more use to us than Padgett , Weatherspoon, Pike, Adrian Griffin, and Charles Oakley were to us last year. If he's here it would give the Rockets a chance to show what he can do in practice and try to earn playing time. I never understood the fascination with drafting someone overseas and letting someone else coach your player for a couple of years in hopes of them getting better and then calling em back to play for your team in the future. I think if the Nba had a true developmental league we wouldn't be having these discussions.
i agree with this. we always hear about the heated one on one matchups between motay and kenny in practice a couple years ago. well, giving malick a chance to gaurd mo, or juwon, or even yao....very skilled low post offensive players, will do much more in terms of developing malick than guarding centers and powerfowards in europe out at the 3pt line.
Let's sign Eddie and Badiane and let them both be backup big men. Let them compete against each other for playing time. They don't cost much and if we strike it lucky with either or even better both then we will be set for years. We can always use the money saved to swing another deal if needed. This whole thing along with the desperation to sign Barry, regardless of cost, strikes me like JVG is desperate to win at at all costs this year. Is his job insecure or what? I agree we need a summer league team. Are they trying to save a few bucks foolishly?
Lets send him to AAA Barcelona. He has spent enough time in AA. We need to strengthen our farm system. All we have now is Spanoulis and Badman. Maybe we should send Gaines there so that he can gain enough PT to come back in the 2005/2006 season polished and rearing to go.
Judging by what we've heard of his past performance, he is nowhere near good enough to play at the top euro pro levels. Not to mention that they'd be a more than a little insulted by that concept...
http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/basketball/9096539.htm?1c Why cannot the Houston do the same thing with Badiane? We just need a replacement for Cato who is a defensive force with no offensive power other than ally-oops. Badiane can do just as well if he can control his fouls. To me, Badiane is a perfect replacement of Cato: someone who can share the defensive burden with Yao at the 4 or 5. At the same time contribute little on the offensive end. You guys set a too high a bar for Badiane to be NBA ready. Cato has no offensive skill and everybody said he was huge for the Rocket team.
exactly. THe guy most likely can play defensive. So whats the big deal. He can be a exetermly cheap cato.
Spirou Charleroi of the Belgian league? Do they start with their nutritional supplement program with the Pringles chips?
judo (joo' doh) Jp. "gentle way", "the way of yielding," "the way of suppleness/pliancy/flexibility" For all the mavs foreign scouting and associated hype (the nelsons coaching for Lithuania, etc,) they've pretty much hit gold with Nowizitski, who was regarded highly by a lot of people (except stupid George Karl, lol)....but other than that, what do they have to show for it? Najera and Nash came up through the NCAA, so I don't really think they count. So how's that Antoine Rigaudeau working out ? Wang Zhi-zhi? I'll believe the hype later Mark, when he gets up off the pine from being next to Pavel the stand in from My Giant. There's so, so much more to being in the NBA than being big and tall and able to jump. It doesn't seem like it, from watching Cato, but it's true. Shoot, I went to a lousy D-1 basketball school for college; there was a 6-9, strong, athletic PF on the team who could jump high, would dunk, rebound etc, he scored about 10 a game or maybe more. But he had no chance, none, none, none, ever, of even being invited to an NBA training camp --- ever. I'm guessing that, given the choice and ceteris paribus, 10 out of 10 NBA coaches and GM's would start/choose Kelvin Cato over Malick Badiane....and I haven't even seen Badiane play, but I don't know if I even have to to make that statement.
You know, this started out as a joke, but now I think some people actually believe it. Oh well, if it spares me from having to read some other tired things, I guess I'll take it.
