I'm taking a girl out on a date tomorrow night, but there's a small problem: she's vegetarian. This is a culture I know close to nothing about beyond Indian food. Of course, if she's down with fish, that opens up a whole new world of possibilities. In the mean time, I'm operating as if she isn't.

I'm looking for a place that's naturally nicer than some of the well-known, campus area establishments like Veggie Heaven and Wheatsville. Transportation is not an issue. So if you know of any nice veggie places, including always delicious Indian cuisine, please help a brother out.

Mother's Cafe on Duval in Hyde Park. I'm not vegetarian, but they have great food.

Austin is freaking great for vegetarian restaurants. The closest thing they had to fine veg dining closed down though.

Mother's would be a good option. Kind of casual, but not too casual. You should be able to get a nice bottle of wine there.

Casa De Luz is a great macro-biotic place. (It's better than it sounds.) But no alcohol.

Mr. Natural is the best veg Mexican food I've ever had in my life but it's very casual.

Kerbey Lane is another midrange type place. Plenty of options for veg and meat.

    Good luck.

Magnolia Cafe's got good vegetarian options too. I prefer Mag over Kerbey.

i agree with Mother's and Mr. Natural.

the Mr. Natural lunch buffet is pretty solid and always seems to make me fall asleep harder than a barbecue-fest at Salt Lick.

You could go to Threadgill's too. Great vegetable plate and also meat and fish. But it's maybe a little more like family dining than date material.

I think Mother's is your best option. I recommend the vegan lasagna.

If all goes well, take her to Bouldin Creek for breakfast. Best tofu scramble in the history of the world.

My sister is a vegetarian and a student at St. Edward's. She has mentioned pretty much all the restaurants in this thread. Personally, I've tried the vegetarian options at Threadgill's and Kerbey Lane, and they are amazing. Another place I like is Noodleism, it's an Asian place close to 6th, and you can substitute tofu for the meat. I'm a steak/chicken-lovin' girl, but anytime I go to Noodleism I HAVE to get the tofu. The way it's cooked just makes it delicious.

I feel like I'm a vegetarian half the time anyways because when I'm at my parents' house, it's tofu, Boca and Morningstar Farms 24/7. But I'm not complaining. Most meatless products are damn tasty.

Dude how long have you been out of austin?
That place has been long gone like Cedric Benson as the starting running back.

Didn't Mother's close or have a fire or something a few years ago? I thought I heard that..but I could be wrong. Or maybe it was just at that time..

That really sucks. Last time I went was a couple years ago, so I guess it's not that much of a surprise. Bummer. Thanks for the heads up...I may have been trying to look for it next time I'm there.

I'm sure there are several good Chinese places with good stir-fried tofu. *sigh!*

    Also don't say:"Vegetarian huh? Well I'm part cucumber!" ;)

(I actually know a guy who said this just moments before having the entire **** slapped from him.)

As was mentioned -- take her to Mother's on Duval and 43rd -- it burned to the ground last year (the garden section) and is now totally rebuilt/ remodeled. Mother's is more 'datey' than the other places mentioned -- it's a safe bet she will be happy with the food.
