Any must try eating establishments in Austin? I'll be heading up to Austin in a couple of weeks.

I remember eating at a Mexican restaurant that overlooked Lake Travis once.

That was probably the Iguana Grill.

    For fine dining:

    Gumbos - Cajun food
Eddie V's - Seafood and Steaks
    Sullivans - Steaks
Fonde San Miguel - Authentic Mexican

    Other good food

Salt Lick - Best BBQ in the world
    Serrannos - Great Beef Fajitas

    Any others?

I second Gumbo's and Salt Lick. Gumbo's for the food, and Salt Lick for the experence. You have to go to the original locations though (Wells Branch and Driftwood).

Its on 6th street near lamar.

coma may be thinking of Hula Hut. Fun place.

Go eat breakfast at Juan in a Million on E. Cesar Chavez. You can get a Don Juan Taco with two extra tortillas for $2.75. You may not want to eat for the rest of the day. Try that or the Con Queso breakfast.

You can thank me later. :)

Thanks fellas! I will look up all of these places and see which one most closely fits the route I'll be on. I'm only going to be in Austin for about an hour.

Those tacos sound dangerously good, RM!

Hula Hut's on OK place. I went to a birthday party a couple of years ago at another Mexican place that had their Grand Opening that week. It was right next to Hula Hut.

The wait staff royally messed up our order. Took three tries to get it right. We had about 15 people there. I never got what I ordered.

That said, they at first gave us a free round and appetizer's. By they end they decided to Comp the whole meal!!!

That tab was over $500, easy! The waitress had to be consoled by the women in our party. We gave a $200 tip, and left.

That kind of service is impeccable. I will recommend that place as long as I live.

Now..... If I could just remember the NAME of that place, I'd probably be doing a better jobs on recommendations.

home cookin' - hoovers on manor rd, east of i-35. probably my favorite mid-priced meal in town. threadgills is good too (lamar and barton springs)

bbq - salt lick is great. county line is even better in my opinion. stubbs on red river and 8th, iron works on 1st, couple blocks west of i-35, rubys-guadalupe and 29th.

cajun grub - jazz on 6th and brazos(?). excellent!

mexican - guerros on south congress (fish tacos!). curras on oltorf, couple blocks east of congress - mid-priced interior style. my favorite mexican rest. in town.

burgers - best burgers in town are at a bar called casino el camino (6th st, block west of red river). probably the best burgers ive ever had in my life, actually.

italian - miltos on guadalupe and 29th. next to rubys bbq.

I'm pretty sure it's not there anymore. That place has been changed so many times it's funny.

If you're going to be in mid-north Austin and you're looking for some mexican food, either El Mercado is some good tex-mex, or the original Curra's is some real damn good authentic mexican. Both are on Burnet Rd, south of Hwy 183.

Some other pretty good places in mid-town are Starseeds and Kerbey Lane, but they're kind of like a Denny's or an IHOP. I like them for the atmosphere.

    Sushi - Mikado
Korean - Korea House ( Don't order sushi there though)
    DimSum - Marco Polo (I35 & Oltorf)
    Vietnamese - 888 on Oltorf

I am sorry, but I think Dirty is overrated and their hamburger is way too small.

Any of y'all Austinites eaten at Threadgill's lately?

I used to love to go to that place when I was in school. Big-ass chicken fried steak. And their open mike nights were great!

Here's a man who knows his Austin grub.

Juan's a million (or is it Juan's a meal, I forget) - awarded "best handshake" in town. And for good reason. Shake Juan's hand when he comes to your table. But don't go in like a girl, you gotta take it like a man. Star Seeds also has a good breakfast.

Hula Hut's a staple. Also doesn't hurt to get some Mississippi Mud at the Magnolia Cafe. Saltlick is AWESOME bbq.

I ate there two months ago. The chicken fried pork chops were amazing as always.

Good advice on the handshake, Toast. I almost got in a wreck with Juan on the way to eat at his place (it is Juan in a Million, btw). He cut me off, I honked, then when he got out of his car at the restaurant he immediately apologized. "Don't know what I would do if I would've hit one of my best customers!" he said.
