I have 5 guys in the office doing it now and they are dropping weight like mad...of course Bar B Q 4 days a week for lunch is making it one smelly office....

My father is on this and lost about 15 pounds in 2 months or so. He's in his late 50's too. I'm curious how it works though. Practically speaking, how in the world can you eat meat every meal and nothing else. I mean do you just eat a steak every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Tips please!

I lost 14 pounds and 4 inches off my waist in a matter of 5 weeks... first 3 of which, I found out later, I was not doing correctly.

The first phase is called induction. This is primarily the weight losing stage. You basically look at labels on all food at the "carbohydrates" section. Any food that has a carb listed as "sugar" you do not want to consume if at all possible... at least less than 20 grams per day combined. IN other words, say your favorite soft drink is "Code Red: Mountain Dew" and it has 39 grams of carbs per serving... that's 19 over for your daily allowance in one serving!

Stay away from caffiene, aspartame sweetner, sugar.

The key is eat sensibly even though the myth has been "all you can eat proteins." Eat 'til you're comfortably full. After around the second week it'll be easier to handle (caffiene cravings are generally gone in a few days... it was the lack of sweets that got to me, but they've got tons of good sugar free desserts now).

Best sugar substitute for now is called "Splenda." "Diet Rite" cola has no caffiene, no aspartame... it uses Splenda....

Best thing to do is get an Atkins book (paper backs are like $10) and make out your shopping list from it.

Several attempts in my life to lose weight have failed, but Atkins worked quickly and actually easy to waiver on and off of for me (and all men). Women seem to have a hard time getting back into "induction" phase after cheating though.

BTW- there are several veggies, etc. that can be consumed on this diet, just don't excede 20 carbs a day at first. Another tip is: If you must eat carbs, veggie carbs are better for you than say "twinkie" or "Shipley's Do-Nuts" carbs. But that should be common sense.

The idea is to lose down to the target weight, then slowly increase the amount of carbs per day until you see a slight plateau in weight lose, and ease into a usual eating habit that doesn't allow any 5 lb. weight gain. If you gain more than 5 lbs. suddenly, go back to 20 carbs per day to get the target weight back.

    Hope this helps somewhat...

Better yet get the book by atkins. I'm sure they're online somewhere... I've seen 'em at almost any store that sells bestsellers.

buy a book called Power Eating by Susan M. Kleiner. If you read that you will understand what healthy diet and living in all about. You will lose wieght if you follow the atkins diet strictly but your body will go into ketosis and you will not be operating optimally nor healthilty. If you really want to lose weight you need to begin a resisitance training program. Subscribing to Muscle Media magazine will put you on the right track. The other muscle mags out there are meant for people who are taking steroids and want to become freaks.

I myself am in a cutting phase right now. I will give you an example of a diet that cuts about two pounds of fat a week from me without losing any muscle and even gaining about a quarter pound of muscle each week due to my workout program. Without getting in the the workout program here is my diet:

    First meal:
1 Myoplex Deluxe with 16-20 oz of milk = 510 calories
(this is a meal replacement, do not buy it in GNC it is about double the price of everywhere else. Best place is Smoothie king or online.)

This meal keeps my blood sugar stable for about four to five hours, has more protein than two chicken breasts, and tons of vitamins.

    Second Meal:

I either have a grilled chicken breast with a black bean soup at cafe express ( = 350 calories) or a Detour protein bar from designer protein if I am in a hurry. (310 calories)

    Third Meal:
1 more Myoplex Deluxe before evening workout. It burns great as fuel and adds more protein and vitamins = 510 calories

    Night time munching:
I buy pounds of Boarshead deli meat, my favorite is the cracked pepper smoked turkey breast and the honey maple ham. I eat these slices with pickles to my hearts content. This gives me loads of carbless protein and fills me up. I also throw in about three pickles because of the salt in the pickles to replenish what I lose in my workouts. Pickles are practically calorieless. Carrots and celery can also be thrown in for a variety.

But on this diet you will lost about two pounds of fat a week. And it will stay off. You will also feel great and energized. I love the feeling of my pants fitting better every day and I love it when people at the pool start to say, hey man you are looking really good. Believe me, eight pounds off of your body looks like alot.

I do the low carb diet as well. IMO, it is a great diet for me. I lift weights, so I was constantly looking for a diet where I would lose weight that was not muscle. Well, with all the protein I am able to eat, I never have to worry about losing muscle tissue. Aside from the bodybuilding issue, I also found that I felt better than ever. I have a ton of energy and never walk around feeling hungry.

Another great book is Protein Power. Go out and buy it.

Atkins works really well for me, I lost 13 pounds in 6 weeks, 196 down to 183. But eventually you get really tired of just meat ,eggs and cheese. I was jonesing for a big loaf of focaccia bread.

The best way we found to make it work is to slow cook one of those giant briskets with french onion soup mix so you always have some meat aound to heat up. Pork rinds will ease your craving for something crunchy. A spoonful of cream cheese or whipped cream with artiificial sweeteners helps a sweet tooth. Be sure to drink lots of water.

I'm sure ketosis is probably not really good for you but neither is being obese. I lost the weight this spring but have put a lot of it back on this summer due to partying and a lack of exercise in the heat. Guess I need to get back on it.

Why do people even waste their time with diets?

Don't load up on junk food and exercise regularly, nothing more nothing less.

I went from 265 to 215 on the Atkins Diet a couple of years ago. Now I eat at least 40 grams of protien at every meal, but I eat carbs too. I've been able to maintain this weight for over a year.

It's a good diet as long as you eat healty protiens, not beef and sausage every day. Once you get to your weight, just eat normal and exercise. Water is the key. I literally drink about a gallon of water every day. It has to be cold water and you should sip it all day long, not chug it at one time.

You will lose weight but I got migraines the first 2 days from carb withdrawl. I also cheat on weekends which keeps me sane.

    DM,

If I remember correctly, your pictures showed you were overweight, so I would be a little hesitant to be so glib about something.

I don't know about a lot of you out there but time to excercise etc has simply gone up in smoke.

I have 2 kids and all my free time is ferrying them from practice to practice etc...

I have very little time to get to the gym or the YMCA like I used to.

I will post our results here on the BBS in this thread.

We are going to postpone starting it until after July 4th...Weenies and Chips are not going to be missed by me.

    :)

What it all comes down is to dicipline ... whether its watching carbs/fat grams/exercising or whatever. Most overweight people I do not feel sorry for.

I hear people say, "well, i have a slow metabolism". Six months later they get their stomaches stapled and lose quite a few pounds. Its obvious it had nothing to do with metabolism, but dicipline. Control yourself.

I have a zero tolerance milk allergy. If its something I remotely suspect that might have milk in it, I check the ingredients. If it has it, I don't eat it. plain and simple.

I started it on June 7th. So far I'm down a little over 13lbs and that's with exercising 1-2 a week and some decent walking downtown from my bus stop.

It's freaking tough, but it works. The toughest part for me is not eating cereal. :D

I've also resorted to eating these bars by PowerBar called Pria. They have 17carbs in them, I only eat them when I go exercise. Then I barely eat any other carbs for the day. I have to eat these though, otherwise I have little energy. That's the biggest downfall so far is lack of energy....

I've eaten tons of cheese, beef, tuna and chicken. Check out the bars by Carb Solutions, they are lifesavers when your sweet tooth is calling. Russel Stover also makes some low low carb candy.

I've had no problems with sodas though, I already drank diet all the time. Atkins recommends avoiding Caffeine and Aspartame as much as you can. There is a soda called Diet Rite, made with sucralose which is pretty decent, no caffeine/aspartame.

Also you can make Ice Tea and other drinks with Splenda, its made with sucralose, similar to Equal. It comes in little packets and it is the exact same strength as sugar so you use it the same. It also it heat resistant so you can use it in baking/hot coffee. Equal is horrible in coffee, this stuff is awesome.

The thing about Atkins is it tends to make you more hungry for carbs once you go off of it. Yea...it works as long as you stay on it. Once you go off of it, then you have this strong desire for the carbs you were missing and, pretty soon, all that weight just comes right back and maybe worse than before.

There is another protein diet called the Miami South Beach Diet or something. It is similar to Atkins with an induction phase but it differs in that it allows back in the good carbs(whole grains, non-processed carbs, etc.) to where your not having to avoid carbs for the most part. You are just avoiding the bad carbs(white flour, processed carbs, etc.). So, you get to keep good carbs in your diet and since these are the healthy good carbs...they don't make you hungry like those processed carbs do.

You may want to check that out if your not down with totally limiting your carb in-take.

Dada...cut out those DPs man...their killing you! All that sugar is being converted to fat and probably making you become a Type II diabetic. Drink diet if you must and drink more water.

Oh also forgot to mention..... this is the worst part by FAR.

All of the meats in Atkins don't give you enough dietary fiber, which means your bodily output is severly clogged.

Either take fiber pills or there are some other tips on www.atkins.com about this. I usually eat one of these low carb tortillas per day. The big tortillas are 19 carbs, but 14 of them are fiber, the small tortillas only have 3 net carbs with 9 fiber. They get the job done. ;) I think you are supposed to have 25 dietary fiber grams per day. I've only been able to find them at the big new HEBs.

Also, EAS makes some great shakes called Carb Control. They taste excellent and have 2 carbs, 2 of which are fiber, so basically 0 net carbs.

I have a friend that is trying the low-carb diet. She has to have next to no carbs for four weeks then on the weekend of the fourth week she gets to have what she calls "shock weekend" or high-carb weekend where she can eat whatever she likes. She says she has lost a nice amount of weight and likes others have said before she has found a lot of substitutes for things that she cannot eat on her diet.

You'll definitely lose weight, but you'll also clog your arteries.

If you want to lose weight, exercise and go vegetarian. You'll be shocked at how fast your health improves and how much more energy you'll have.

...said the guy whose handle is GreenVegan76. :p
