    Ok,

Due to the 4th of July and my beer drinking brother in town, my wife and I had to delay the start of the atkins diet to last Sunday...after 2 slugish days...I started to feel some great energy.

Now.....after 4 full days, I am down 8 pounds and my wife is down 9.

We are both deep in Ketosis as the sticks indicate, and eating a lot of fish, salads, and pork chops. Tomorrow we are having our first steak.

It has been extremely easy so far, and the results are shocking.....

The weight is flying off, and I have not been hungry once.

Of course giving up the 6-8 Dr. Peppers a day gave me withdrawls at first, but now I have some good flavored Sparkling water that is far more refreshing.

I started at 205, and now am at 197...on my way to 165.....WOOOT !!!

I used to drink 3 a day before I gave it up. You don't even miss it after a week. Hell, I even stopped downing Gatorade and I used to live on that stuff.

ahh, i'm glad this came back up b/c i have a question about the 20 g of carbs thing. is that 20 g of any and all carbs, or only certain kinds? i mean a freakin glass of milk has 12, eating a piece of fruit could have almost 20. what are you supposed to drink except water and that sucralose diet crap stuff. not that i actually plan on doing this but i was just thinking 20 seems damn near impossible. plus i don't have the desire to try to fix up lots of fish or meat on a daily basis.

I'm looking into dropping a few pounds, Sadly all my favorite drinks seem to have High Fructose Corn Syrup :(

But I've only had 1 soda in the past 2 weeks and I can't really say I'm hurting.

    Two Questions:
    1. How tall are you [165 seems kind of light]
    2. Are you Mixing in any addition Exercise? . . . is it recommended?

    I guess that was 3

Way to go DaDa! I went on Atkins two days ago. I'm drinking water like a MoFo.

Where did you get the keto sticks?

Will report my progress as I go.

What a trip.....I swear I read this EXACT same thread many months ago.

There must be a glitch in the Matrix.

You know, I can't remember exactly how the Atkins diet works, but it's only the first few weeks that are insane. More and more authorities are coming out and saying the diet has some merit. And carbs (especially highly processed ones) are really starting to get a bad rap. Although they're currently being forgotten while Trans Fats have the limelight.

20 carbs is the limit...no fruit, no milk for the first 2 weeks.

You turn your body from Glucosis to Lipolysis, or Ketosis....basically, you make it burn the fat for energy.

But 20 is only the limit for the first 2 weeks of induction, after that you can slowly start adding in carbs until you find the level that your body can handle and still lose weight.

After you reach your desired weight you add carbs until you start gaining a bit, and then you adjust back down and WALLAH you know the limit your metabolism can handle.

River...I am a shade under 5'9", so 165 is about right, yes I am excercising...Racquetball once a week, and basketball 2 times a week......

Actually, I have always been really active even at 205.....but I am tired of the spare tire, and want more energy.....

7 guys at work are doing it, and my wife has joined me, so far, everyone is raving about it.

One of the cool things is to take measurements at the start...neck, belly, thigh, waist...and watch them drop.

I am already down one belt loop.

    WOOHOOO !!!

Atkins main point is that man was never meant to eat so much processed sugars, and pastas, and breads etc....he contends that our body chemistry is essentially the same as it was 50,000 years ago when our diet consisted primarily of meats and a few vegatables etc.....therefore we have replaced good carbs with bad ones, and we eat too many on a daily basis....for evidence I present my 6 - 8 Dr. Peppers a day....240+ grams of empty carbs...yeck.

I am really happy on it right now and will keep everyone posted.

GutterSnipe....WAY TO GO....we can keep each other motivated on the BBS. I got the stips called Ketostix at Walgreens....they are also at most major stores....it is a big psychological boost to see it purple as you know you are currently burning fat.

    Good luck.

I have been thinking about going on this diet and even my wife tried it.

My question is, what do you guys do for "snacks" between meals? What types of snack type foods fits in the Atkins Diet?

    Deuce,

We have been having slices of cucumber with cream cheese and smoked salmon.....or slices of chedder cheese, or celery with port cheese in them.

All good for you, and yummy.......

My girlfriend and I started this diet on Monday as well. I was doing some more research on it yesterday and found some very mixed reviews. One thing to look out for is all the vitamins and minerals you are missing by cutting back on some vegetables and not eating fruit. Another thing I heard was most of the weight loss (at least early on due to Ketosis) is from water loss.

Both Dr Atkins as well as those against his diet seem to make a lot of sense. I think I'm going to do more of a modified Atkins diet. Low carbs, but make sure to eat just enough fruits and vegetables to get the nutrients you need (they help prevent cancer and other diseases). I think we are going to occasionally have some wheat pasta and stuff of that sort, but stay away from breads, snack, donuts and other processed goodies. It definitely helps when your significant other is doing the same thing with you.

Duece to answer your question your supposed to lose the cravings for snacks in between meals. That's part of the selling point for the Atkins diet, you'll eventually lose your desire for breads, sweets and snacks. In the meantime, I have some cheese, brocolli and belive it or not pork rinds (no carbs).

What are you doing for fiber?

I did it for almost four weeks, I didn't have ANY energy, especially when I exercised. I lost about 10-12lbs. I was fairly strict about it, but I found it just wasn't for me. No energy and constantly feeling bloated due to the lack of fiber, not cool.

As for Fiber, I eat a salad a day.....as ruffage, I have had no issues with a lack of fibre.

Also, I take a One a Day essentials vitamin to assist with the plan.

I have great energy, and am enjoying the shrinking beltsize.

My wife is doing even better then me.....I can not recommend it enough.

165 ain't light. I'm 6'1" and 160-165 and I can't get rid of this little gut. I do 2 hours of cardio every day. I've tried ab exercises up the wazoo... NUTTIN'! :(

Isn't the first week or so just water weight loss? I believe that is why it is such a rapid initial loss, although it does continue.

There is no doubt that it works as far as losing weight, it is just too dangerous in my mind and is not a long-term lifestyle change.

    edit: drapg,

I think I remember this coming up before...you run a lot right? I think my only thought at the time was that maybe your cardio is not intense enough. Try anything different since? In any event, if nothing works it might just be genetic.

Also, a lot of ab exercises do not flatten or thin the stomach, they just bulk up the musles. There are esercises out there that are almost like stretching that are supposed to be better. I think one of them was something like getting on the floor on your toes and elbows/forearms with your back slightly curved and bringing your stomach into your spine, releasing, repeating, etc. I have never tried this, it was just something I read that you might want to look into.

I am slightly over 6' and am about 160 with a little around the waist I wouldn't mind losing...but I have been unable to do any real exercise for the past 8 months, so once I get back into it in September I expect it to go away. Who knows, though, I might be a bit like you.

Your genes determine where your fat is stored so doing a ton of ab exercises might be making your abs strong but they won't burn off fat. You can't burn fat on a specific area of your body, and from the sound of your body it seems that the last fat to go is the fat on your stomach. Not much you can do but cardio and a healthy diet.

This is probably right. I had my body fat checked 2 years ago and it was 18%. Everyone I know thought it had to be a mistake, b/c by looking at me everyone says I'm a freakin' skeleton. But I know about 90% of that body fat was stored in my gut.

    Damn my parents! :D
