He fell behind in the count and had to basically throw it down the middle. Pitcher got lucky, it happens. 2-2 middle of the 3rd.

I wondering why the batter got to take 1st base on a balk. I thought once a balk happens the play is dead. Can you have two things happens on a pitch such as a balk and a walk?? Please Advise.

I don't know if you're watching the game on Fox or not, but basically what the announcers were told was that if the batter hit the ball out of the park on the balk, he'd be given the home run. Since the pitch was actually ball four, they gave the batter the walk.

The announcers went on to say that the umpire should have stopped play at the time of the balk, and awarded the runner on first his base. The announcers went on to say that they had never seen that call ever, and that they didn't agree with the rule book, if the ruling was correct.

Yes, I am watching the game on Fox.
I understand in balk situation that baserunner(s) advances to the next base, but I never seen a batter advance to 1st. When a balk is called the play (or pitch) is noramally called dead & a baserunner (if any) is awarded the next base. I just never seen that before. Interesting. I hope it does throw Roy-O out of his element.
