Astros purchased the contract of RHP Jared Fernandez from Triple-A New Orleans.

Fernandez might finally receive his first real chance to establish himself as a starter in the majors. The knuckleballer had a 3.81 ERA in 23 starts and three relief appearances for New Orleans. He'll probably be an adequate fifth starter for the Astros, but he's not a good bet in fantasy leagues.

Astros designated RHP Peter Munro for assignment.

Kind of surprising that the Astros would drop Munro instead of optioning Kirk Saarloos to Triple-A New Orleans. Munro had a 4.67 ERA in two starts and 37 relief appearances for the Astros this season.

    That's stiff.

Especially for the guy that pitched the most during the no-hitter against the Yankees.

The Astros are going to regret this move. I can't believe they chose Miceli over Munro.

I have a feeling the Cardinals will claim Munro and use him as a starter for the rest of the season. Watch him do well.

I forgot to add that both of Munro's starts this season came against the Cardinals. He didn't do too well, but I am curious how he would have fared against the Reds or Cubs had he been given the opportunity.

Why do we keep giving up these players for nothing. It seems like the Astros do more than their fare share of this.

How does "Astros designated RHP Peter Munro for assignment" turn in Atros release Pete Munro?

    Btw, Saarloos sucks big time.

If they are designated for assignment, the team has 10 days to trade, release, that player before they can send them down to the minors because they are out of options. See Lugo, Jonathon Johnson, and some other players over the past years. So if a team claims that player, they get him. But if they clear waivers then the team can put them in the minors.

I live about 2 hours from there.

But as far as Munro, I agree that they will regret it. Check out his numbers for last season. He was one of our most underrated pitchers. He was also one of my favorite Astros.

That doesn't make any sense, however, I'm not the GM...They will regret...

No reason to let Saarloos go. He has not even had 1 year of ML experience. He was only drafted in 2001.

The Astros had to release someone from the 40 man roster to make room for Fernandez which is what releasing Munro accomplished. Saarloos is way too young and inexperienced to give up on.

Saarloos' ERA as a reliever is around 3.80.

I doubt we will live to see the day that the Astros "regret" releasing (if he indeed goes somehwere else) Pete Munro, a journeyman middle reliever.

Bill Brown said on the game cast that Munro cleared waivers and will be starting for New Orleans. I'm surprised no one picked him up.
