Kevin Cash to Red Sox for shortstop Angel Sanchez. http://bit.ly/aKHV7H Alyson Footer of MLB.com reports (via Twitter) that the Astros have sent catcher Kevin Cash to Boston in exchange for minor league infielder Angel Sanchez. This is Cash's second stint with the Red Sox, as he served as the team's backup catcher in 2007 and 2008. Cash was designated for assignment by Houston last week and ended up in the minors, though it was rumored that Boston could be interested in bringing him back to add depth in the wake of Victor Martinez's thumb injury. Cash has a .541 OPS in 646 major league plate appearances, but any big hits he provides while backing up Jason Varitek would be considered a bonus for the Sox. In nine pro seasons, Sanchez has amassed just 31 major league plate appearances, three of which came this year in Boston. The 26-year-old has a .279/.334/.351 career line in 3575 minor league PAs in the Boston, Toronto and Kansas City systems and can play shortstop, second base and third base. Footer tweets that Sanchez will take the place of Yordany Ramirez on the Astros' 40-man roster, as Houston has designated Ramirez for assignment. The 25-year-old outfielder has a career .642 OPS in 2615 minor league plate appearances.
It is like trading used used toilet paper.... I cannot believe that baseball in Houston has reached this level....
No.. no he does not.. the player the Astros received is actually worse than Cash, I can't believe he is going on the 40 man roster.
Getting worked up about this trade is silly. The Astros traded their expendable leftover junk for the Red Sox's expendable leftover junk, so we don't have to watch Blum play SS for the next two months. This is exactly the trade they should have done. In years past they would have traded half the farm for Miguel Tejada, or something similar. This is the absolute minimum the 'stros could do to get someone to play SS defense while Manzella is out, since it appears that neither Blum nor Navarro can get regular playing time and avoid embarrassing themselves. And they certainly have no backlog of talented SS prospects sitting in the minors ready and waiting for their chance.
His career ML AVG is higher than his OBP. You don't see that often, particularly with position players. He has 1 SF, no BB and no HBP in 31 PA. Not trying to analyze his numbers because it doesn't matter, esp. with that insignificant sample size. It just stood out at first glance.
More than Carlos Lee or Lance Berkman. You see the Red Sox giving up Angel Sanchez for either of them? Nope.
It was a move that made sense for both teams. Sox needed a catcher and got one back that has experience catching for Tim Wakefield. Astros needed someone who wouldn't be a complete joke fielding the SS position.
