Just curious if there are any preppers here. Been reading a bit about the preppers since the Lanza shootings (and the school bus shooting kidnapping yesterday).

A REAL prepper would not tell anyone they are a prepper.

Because of my job and watching many people not be prepared for a natural disaster or evacuation order, I'm probably further along on the prepper scale than most, though not ridiculously so. In case of evacuation, we made plans so our family could round up all the important stuff and be on the road in about 20 minutes. We have a few bulk goods stored and lots of camping gear. Thought in vague terms about actions to take in response to earthquakes, volcanoes, and zombie attacks. That's about it.

    I have a zombie plan.

It will take us about 1min to round up what we need and get on the road.

If being a prepped mean being about to survive on my own at any given moment for 2 weeks then yes, I'm a prepper.

I have enough Food, Ammo, Fuel, water purifiers and supplies to handle a pretty powerful storm. I can get it all in a car with camping supplies in less than 20 mins.

    I'm a prepper, he's a prepper, she's a prepper, we're a prepper, Wouldn't you like to be a prepper, too?

I've been watching a lot of The Walking Dead, and as a result I've been reading a lot of survivalist handbooks (such as the SAS book) and learning various urban skills that would be handy (lock picking, hand to hand combat, hot wiring etc.). In a post-apocalyptic situation I have no skills, so I'm trying to change that. I'm a wannabe prepper, but I'm probably too lazy and skeptical to become a full prepper.

I'm not a true prepper, but we do have enough "stuff" strategically put away so that we can easily deal with a prolonged emergency. Having watched friends go through economic turmoil in their native country, and old school friends now suffering from social breakdown where they are now, it's a good reminder to me that we live in a highly leveraged society... we have it so good and often fail to appreciate it.

I'm a prime example of this. I spend huge chunks of my time playing and watching football and basketball. It's a bummer when my teams lose. I yell at my TV when a player does something stupid. At the same time, I follow the box score on my iPad, and I text with buddies on my Android phone. Most games, I have beer and nachos, and my wife brings me refills. And I justify all of this in my own mind because I "work hard" to earn a good living.

Well, if you look at my hands, you'll see that I haven't worked a hard day in my life. Prepping, with a small "p", keeps me alert to the possibility that things can change in an instant. And it reminds me that I should appreciate the good things in life while they last.

Like, for instance, this current Rockets roster. D@mn, it's one exciting team!

You need ammo to fend off the non-preppers coming for your food and water. Katrina?
