AP: Army Corps of Engineers says police killed some of its workers as they crossed a bridge on the way to repair a canal.

It's breaking news on CNN.com, I will post what they have when they get it.

AP: Army Corps of Engineers says its contractors were not killed by police, but gunmen who fired at them were killed. More soon.

    Report: Police shoot gunmen
    http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/04/katrina.impact/index.html

Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on contractors crossing a bridge to make levee repairs, The Associated Press reported.

Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley told AP that police shot at eight people who had guns, killing five or six.

The Army Corps of Engineers told AP that 14 contractors escorted by police were fired upon while crossing the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

Corps spokesman John Hall told AP the contractors were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help fix a breech in the 17th Street Canal.

Initial AP reports had wrongly indicated that the contractors themselves were shot by police; no other details were immediately available.

WTF?!! I would expect that to happen in a warzone like Iraq, but why the hell were people shooting at the contractors? More importantly, who were those people?

    Very weird

With easy access to plethora of firearms, it only takes a few mad men to terrorize a large region, whether in peace time or chaos. It baffles me to no end that guys like ROXRAN only see the utilities of guns from one side (in case of SHTF). Just imagine how rescue missions can be carried out in a city of no firearms at all vs a place where everyone is possibly armed ...

I have never met one of the accused in Belfast. All those in this great land are freedom loving people, and those who strive to fight for our continued freedom.

These same "mad men" have always terrorized New Orleans, even before the the disaster. This is across all nations. I don't think just because 1% criminals should cause the remainder 99% of us to lose our right to bear arms.

Just like the 1% of Mohammed Atta's shouldn't cause the remainder of Muslims to be harrassed by the authorities. Right?

Your assumption is incorrect. The percentage of "mad men" is based on nothing. I do agree with the idea that the minority should not cause the rest to lose their rights. If the guns were taken away, they would use boards with nails. Desparate situations call for desperate actions.
