I was driving home from work one night and for some reason i started to think back to elementary and middle school and remember all the times we would sit out waiting for the bus playing pencil break. God we got in so much trouble at school if you were caught playing. I have no idea why they didn't let us play...i mean it was our own pencils, not like we were taking peoples to play...but it just got me thinking of what other types of games u guys used to play when you were younger that were just made up....another one that comes right off the top of my head was thumps....man my hands would be hurting after a day of that.....

Damn. I sucked at pencil break. Half the time I broke my own pencil on the pullback.

I liked that game "slaps" where you place your hands on top of someone else's and you have to move them when you think they're trying to pull their hands out from under yours and slap them.

Once the pencil break phenomenon hit in 5th grade, the faculty quickly outlawed it. There was this one guy, Joe Garcia who was an absolute beast. Then it was discovered that he put extra lead fish weights in his pencil under the eraser.

There was one where you had your hands out and the other person would try to slap it. You try to pull your hands quickly back before getting hit.

I particularly despised "Thumps" where you just flicked the other guy's cupped hands until one of you gave up. Pretty pointless game.

Ah, pencil break. I remember that, I remember people trying to use those jumbo sized pencils, people tried to use chop sticks, we ripped the erasers away from the pencils and bit the metal casing of the erasers down to form an miniature axe.

I hated the kids that cheated by keeping their pointer on top of the pencil and pushing through

loved paper football. we used also play a game that involved our knuckles that is similiar to hand slaps. i don't remember calling it bloody knuckles though. you and your opponent would stand in front of each other with closed fists. if you were on the offensive you would try to hit your opponents hands before they moved them. it was alot more painful than hand slaps.

we also played the "pushing off" game. stand in front of your opponent and try to knock them off balance either by pushing off each other's hands or faking the push. you weren't allowed to move your feet.

Of course. You're referring to the "Husky" pencil, which was banned from pencil break early on. If you bit the end, then you could tear through anything.

For some reason I remember these pencils that were made in China that would absolutely own all others in pencil break. I even had a fiberglass pencil that I would bring out when I really wanted to kick ass. Good times...

I remember the pencil fights and thumps. If you fliched or lost, the other guy would hit you in the arm real hard. I grew up in Louisiana, and thought we were the only ones playing these stupid games.

    Too funny.

yeah, i remember we had a pencil manchine that served up pencils for a quarter. When they put in NFL football pencils, and those "pencils from China," people would bring their life savings in quarters to buy them.

Were the "pencils from China," covered in black with rainbow confetti on them?

We had some pencils laying around at work, so we started playing pencil break. They were regular joe schmoe numebr 2 pencils, so it was boring.

Paper football was the ****. We would try to modify it by taping it tight, and all this other crap so it can fly. It was too fun.

We played thumps, knuckles, and slaps hand game.

I remember in fifth grade. We were so damn bored at recess. So we ended up playing hop scotch. Man, those were some big time battles.

As the days became weeks, we decided to up the challenge. There were pieces of concrete about the size of baseballs, sometimes footballs. We would use those to throw on the hop scotch thing.

    Fun times indeed.

Good times. Thumps and pencil break were fun.

    Trading punches got pretty brutal.

Not to take anything away from thumps. I've had pretty swolen fingers and knuckles back in the day. Some of the guys were just too good at it. The ones that could hits the same spot at maximum velocity.

    ouch!

I just remembered the other games which we used to use coins.

You would use 3 coins and have to shoot one coin through the other 2 until you reached the goal but that one coin couldn't hit the other 2 or the other person would take over.....also remember playing football with a quarter where you had 3 pushes to get the quarter to hang slightly over the edge of the table to score a goal....

Man i swear some people came up with the coolest games....dont' know how they were evolved but damn they were fun.

Paper football was the bomb...i could kick the triangle a good 30 feet when we used to do a contest in my house....
