Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some advice. My wife and I are moving back to Houston in a few weeks from Dallas to the Post in Midtown. How is the area there? I am from Houston but I don't know anything about that area. Is it safe to walk our dog late at night around the building? What areas should we avoid going to? Also, does anyone know of a good workout gym near there? Thanks in advance.

One of my best friends lives in the Post in Midtown. Great place to live, if you are young and like to party. They actually have their own gym for people who live there and it is pretty good as far as community gyms go. There was actually a shooting in the lobby there a couple of weekends ago but that was kind of a freak thing I think. Every time I go there it is pretty peaceful. If you would like more info you can send me an e-mail through the bbs.

There are alot of gangsters there. Alot of hood rats.

On a few occasions you can find a drag queen around that area.

I live in Midtown right next to Post. Like LeGrouper mentioned, it's got to be the best place in town for a single person to live. Great bars and restaurants within walking distance. On the weekends, I rarely drive anywhere, because all the places I go are withing walking distance (Spec's liquor, bars, restaurants, the cleaners, the grocery store, the gym at the apartment).

In terms of safety, this part of Midtown isn't bad, but if you stray even one street to the north (north of Gray), it gets VERY BAD very quick. You need to stay right around Post to avoid the bad spots. I wouldn't walk a dog at night around here. Move to the Woodlands or Sugar Land if that's what you're looking for. I got scared sh!tless about a year ago when I rode my bike through that neighborhood north of Gray during the DAY.

There was somebody shot in the Post parking garage last weekend. It was a couple of asian gang-banger types going to Club VII, which is on the ground level of Post. They were arguing over a parking space. What a couple of pricks. They are not typical of the residents at Post, but rather were just going to that nightclub that night.

Post has a sweet gym. If you need something bigger, the Downtown Club is very close, but kinda expensie. The major chains (ballys, 24 hr) are somewhat farther out - closest ballys is the Rice Village, closest 24 hr is richmond/610.

My company puts up shows in Midtown. We like it.

It's a part of town in transition. There are sections that are springing up with growth and sections that seem run down. Lots of good Vietnamese food.

It is very close to the hot bars in Houston right now - The Red Door, and The Red Star. The Front Porch is a cool hangout right at the bottom of Post. Great views in Post and they have the coolest balcony in Houston in the 15th floor. Great place to make out. The club seven is actually on the bottom floor of the building, along with a great sushi bar named the Blowfish. Across the street is Farrago's a great casual restaurant.

Thanks for all the info so far. I don't need to walk the dog far, just take him outside to take care of his business. I wasn't sure if I needed to be looking over my shoulder the whole time.

I saw the Front Porch Pub when we were looking at the apartments. It looks like a pretty cool bar. I'm sure we'll be spending way too much money there.

The gym at the apartment looked good to me, but my wife is wanting something where she can take some classes (kickboxing, yoga, etc.). Not my thing, but I told her I would try to find out.

Kicksport is the bext kickboxing/krav maga/pilates/yoga place in town. It's in the Greenway/Kirby area. It's pricey though, $65-100 a month depending on what you want. The gym there sucks though, and they took away their serious sparring/fighting classes to make way for more chick-friendly type of classes... You're wife will love it, but if you join, you'll feel like a eunuch working out there.

The Post apartments & lofts are very nice, though seriously overpriced. You're paying for proximity to dtown & to the hot clubs right now. If all you do is stay in the lofts and don't venture north or east, you'll be ok.

If you're single, don't care about dumping a ton of money into a place you will never own, and don't care about the increased traffic, crime, and hoodlums that the bars/clubs bring in then by all means go for it.

With Houston bars & clubs, you have about six months before the Richmond Strip/wannabe gangster element discovers them & begins to displace the $30,000 Millionaires who frequent them. By next spring Midtown will go from guys in shiny shirts, driving their leased Boxsters, to wannabe Yakuzas in driving the imports w/ giant tailpipes that their parents, not their bad gangsta selves, are paying for. This is what happened dtown, & it's what has already happened at Red Star. VII is a prime example, hot almost a year ago, dead now. Red Door will go the same way in a few...

You're married, w/ a dog. Just my .02 cents, but if I were you I'd move further out into the Rice Village/Kirby or Buffalo Speedway area, get a bigger place for less money (your goal should be to try and save $ for purchasing your own real estate), in a safer environment.

If you want your "club of the moment" fix, you can drive 10 -15 minutes, from a bit further west, when you want it.

Yeah, I'd much rather live near/in Rice Village, but the problem was I had to transfer to another Post Property or they would have charged me a ridiculous amount to break our lease. I didn't really have much of a choice on where we could move to. Luckily the Post in Houston was giving 4 months free rent so it knocked down the price a lot. I don't care much about the club scene. I'd rather just sit at a pub and drink a few beers.
