I read something in the installation guide about it...I think I can, I just need some sort of splitter...I dunno. I am quite frustrated that you can't record two shows at once. If I can't record and watch something else, I'm definitely going to have to consider taking it back.
DirecTiVo alone should be incentive enough to switch to DirecTV. Not only is it cheaper than a "standalone," it is more reliable, and out-of-the-box you can watch (or record) two shows simultaneously. Beyond that, you can also choose to watch a third (previously recorded) program, while two "live" programs are being recorded. Hate to repeat myself, but it really does make watching television a much more efficient process.
That's not Tivo's issue, it's a limitation of digital cable and single-tuner satellite boxes. If you could tape a show on VHS while watching another, then you should be able to set-up Tivo that way also.
You need a dual-LNB dish, though, right? I would go with the Oval, Hi-Def dish anyway. DirecTV is not so good in areas with frequent storms though.
You can do it with a round dish and a multiswitch, but an oval dish (which comes with a multiswitch) is preferred. My 3-lnb dish came with 4 outputs. One goes to the HD receiver, two to the TiVo, and one to a cheapie Sony receiver in the bedroom. "Rain Fade" is overrated. Hours lost per month is much less than when I used to use cable.

I think I'm going to take it back...not really worth the money, IMO. If I can't record stuff while watching games, there's no way it's worth $430, plus $13 a month. Oh well.
Wouldn't work on the Sony laptop, but worked in Sony DVD (?!) and ProScan DVD Players. Burns fast; much more reliable than early CD-burners.
Are you looking into buying one? I am, too. If you can wait, you may want to see the early reviews on Sony's new DVD writer. It support the - and + formats. It's one of the reasons you may see other manufacturers dropping their prices. The pricing should be comparable to the HP drives, too. OK, I'm wanting to move it from my television to RM95's Girl's place so I can watch the Rockets and stuff. My question is, if I do this, will it erase the stuff that we've recorded?
RM95, it uses standard computer harddrives. In fact, you can buy a second one and install it according to several hacking websites. I cannot imagine that moving it would erase anything. It might erase your calendar of things to record, but I can't imagine it would execute a delete harddrive command. Then again, I'm speaking from no empirical knowledge...so, take it with a grain of salt.
I would like to get one, got to convince the wife to let me get a new PC first though. I will use my old 1ghz PC to hold all of my media. I wanna convert some AVI(divx) files to MPEG2 and see how well they play on my DVD player.
**** TIVO. I changed nothing, and it didn't record anything that I set it up to record. Actually, it recorded, but for whatever station the cable box was on...it didn't change them. I recorded everything fine until last Tuesday when it decided that it didn't want to change the ****ing channel so we missed our entire week of shows. It's going back to Best Buy this afternoon. Too expensive and the $13/mo. is a ****ing ripoff.
Your TiVo should be similar to my ReplayTV. I have the option to record from a number of sources. If I choose to record from the cable box (necessary for the premium channels), I can have an infrared device change channels automatically. It is tricky setting this up. I had to let the ReplayTV box know that it was necessary to input 3 digits for the channel (011 insted of 11). I do not rely on the ReplayTV to change channels itself (the cats love to play with the little infra red switicher). If I want a premium channel recorded, I set the cable box to the channel prior to recording. That being said, I generally record straight from the attached cable line. I have never had a problem doing this in the 2+ years I have owned the ReplayTV. I can record one program while watching another with no problem, AND I can record a program while also watching a recorded program. One of the great features of TiVo and ReplayTV is the ability to not have to wait for a show you are recording to be over before you watch it. For instance, if you set up to record Friends becuase you are out to dinner and you get home at 7:10, rather than waiting fo 7:30 to roll around, you can simply 'rewind' it, start watching and eventually 'catch up'. The only thing I'd want different is a second tuner to enable me to 'disk' two programs at once. I would strongly suggest giving your TiVo more time and figure out how to use it. It is a great device.
The thing is, I did. Nothing was unplugged accidentally or anything...it just stopped changing the channels. I moved it over to my girlfriend's last night after discovering that it didn't record a single one of our shows, hooked it up, and it wouldn't work correctly over there either. Oh well, I've come to the conclusion that $430, plus $13 bucks a month is too damn expensive for a glorified VCR. I think I'm going to pick up one of those VCR/DVD combos.
Let me know what you find on those DVD/VCR combos, I am looking into one also. They start around 200$ Just depends on the brand you want. I wish they made a Multi-Disc DVD/VCR combo.

There really isn't any shows that we want to watch that are on at the same time as the ones we normally watch. Plus, we've got our working out schedule down and it doesn't butt into our shows enough to warrant spending that much money.

Yeah, I'll probably just pick it up today when I go take the TIVO back. Plus, RM95's Girl needs a new DVD player anyway. We save $200 plus $13/mo for basically the same thing.
