I've played bass for 16 years. I've played everything from rock and pop to Latin and jazz - and everthing in between.

I played professionally for quite a while handling the bass chair in as many as 6 bands at once and playing all over the place both in and out of Texas. I've also done a ton of session (studio) work.

Now, I own a production company where I play EVERYTHING - guitar, which I've played for about 10 years, keys, drum programming, percussion, bass, of course, etc. and my partner and I do a little bit of everything from radio/tv production to voice over work to recording projects - I have a small digital project studio.

The production site is www.zerozero8.com - still don't have any music up but you can get an idea of what we do.

In a meek attempt to follow that post by Jeff, I am a saxophone player. I've played for about 12 years.

As for musical tastes, I like it all. Metal to Mozart.

In an even more meek attempt...

I do not play any instrument very well, although I have always dreamed of it. Tried piano, failed - tried guitar, failed. I have problems coordinating both hands on strings and keyboards. The only real success (mild) has been with the drums. But I have no reason to buy a drum kit just to play by myself in my garage...

Sigh, so I just stick to painting and drawing.

Jeff: sounds really great. I hope it all works out well for you.

Actually, I haven't touched my horn in over a year (which is something I swore would never happen).

Last year, for the first time ever, I was in school and not in the band. Granted, it was my last year of college and I didn't pursue a degree in music. I was always pretty damn good, if I do say so myself.

I need to find a local community jazz something-or-other to get into.

I spent most of my twenties doing the Houston Music scene between 1987-1996.

I played bass and some guitar in a band called Love Twitch. Man that was a great time. We did alright. We could always get gigs but we were never a local sensation or anything.

I followed that with a 2 year stint with a band called Liquid Kitchen. This band got better "professional" gigs but the vibe wasn't as cool as with the previous band.

After getting married in 96 I turned my creative attention to designing web pages. I managed to get a cheap computer, taught myself HTML and PhotoShop, spent 1 year doing tech support for 2 ISPs and finally got my "break". Now I work for Houston's leading new media design company and make more in 1 year than I made in the 9 years of gigging.

I love the fact that I got to "live life" during my 20s, skip college, and still make a great living.

    Life is great!

I've been playing guitar for exactly five years to the day now. I've heard this said about a lot of musicians before: (I'm not one; let's not sully the reputation of musicians by including rank amateurs such as, well, me)

They were so terrible that they couldn't learn anyone else's songs, so they had to write their own.

That was definitely me. I taught myself to play by buying a book of Led Zeppelin tablature and learning the riffs. I think the only song I learned all the way through was 'Gallows Pole'. [IMG] Playing other people's music wasn't all that interesting to me in the first place, but when you factor in the fact that I had no talent, it made writing my own songs that much more attractive.

I've been tooling around with a four-track for a couple months now, and it is always nice to be reminded of just how far you have to go to be considered "competent". [IMG] That was one of the cool things about meeting Jeff-- hearing some of the stuff he's recorded and realizing there is a very, very, very large gap between having interesting song ideas and being able to competently and professionally execute them.

I've never considered people who only play other people's songs that talented. (No offense to any cover-band people here, ok.) They may be talented at guitar techniques, but not necesarily talented artists.

Writing and playing original music is so much more fulfilling. When people cheer, you know they are cheering something that is yours. My first band only played 2 covers in all of our years: Gouge Away by the Pixies and a bastardized punk version of Puff the Magic Dragon.

I don't consider myself an overly talented guitarist or bassist. But I do consider myself an artist.

In my mind the only reason to play a cover is to pay homage to that band.

I've been playing guitar off and on for about 18 years. I don't consider myself too be talented at all and I play mostly songs by other bands that I like. I don't play with other musicians and usually play to music I like to listen to.

So, based on that, I'm a closet guitarist who never had the patience or determination to learn to read or write music. I just like to play and I like the feeling I get when I can learn new songs by ear and duplicate it to my satisfaction sometimes even putting my own spin/take on it. I learn to play songs just by ear without a book or super-tab or transcribed notes to learn it. I have dabbled in learning scales and arpeggios but not much.

In summary, give me a few beers, a Rocket halftime, a GK amp, a Jackson guitar with locked down tremolo, a pic, and I'll give you my best impersonation of a cover guitarist with no band who can make decent music which includes Led Zep, Rush, Metallica(on occassion when I'm feeling thrashy), Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and lots of others. The drunker I am, the better I may play. Amen. [IMG]

Well, the only thing I ever played was the Saxophone back in middle school. I guess I was good, but never really got into it. I've ALWAYS, for as long as I can remember, wanted to play the guitar, but never did. The urge has come back over the past few months.

Can someone recommend an inexpensive electric guitar WITH GOOD SOUND for a beginner?

    Thanks ya'll!

Played Guitar for about 3 years. I am the first to admit that I am no where near where other people probably should be after 3 years. I basically play other people's stuff, Hendrix, Zepplin, Kansas, Clapton, and the like. I love it though, for me there are two outlets: basketball and guitar.

The reason I chose to play guitar is because my father is a professional trumpet player and is a freaking bad @ss on it. So I figured I would pick an insturment that no matter how little I knew on it, I would still know more than my dad. [IMG]

I play the tenor sax. Been playing for about ten years now. I play in a funk band called 6 West ( www.sixwest.com ) We'll be on a Disney show called 2 Hour Tour on the Disney Channel in July.

I also play guitar. I started in '87 but gave it up after I broke my left arm(twice.) I started reteaching myself 3 years ago and am pretty good now.

I've also been playing piano off and on for the last two years.

I'm current a Music Education major at UH.
