My CD-Rom will not read disks, it is acting like there is no disk in it. How can i fix this. I have a CD-Rom cleaner, but it works only when you can read the disk then it spins and cleans it. Is there a kind that doesnt need to be read to work?

It could be any number of problems, ranging from a scratched or defective laser to outdated drivers.

How old is your CD-ROM? The reason I ask is that AFAIK, the quality of the read laser deteriorates over time, so if your CD-ROM is old it might be best for you to just get a new one. Don't worry, top-of-the-line CD-ROM drives cost like $45 - $50...very affordable.

    What OS?
Will it not read ANY disc?
    How old?

last time I ran into that problem..it was a defective laser..
CH has it right..if it is over two years old..go ahead and buy a new one..it's worth it.

my cd player won't play audio cd's.
I can read disks but when it comes to playing them for aural pleasure. No Dice.

All computer audio settings are set. None are set to mute or not selected.

I'm thinking there's a cable that's not connected somewhere, but I don't know which one?

    any advice would be appreciated.

very common problem, and every time ive seen this happen, one of the cd rom cables has ALWAYS been loose. open it up and take a look, or if you dont know how, find someone who does know a little to open it up and check all the cables.
---this is if its reading, but not playing audio cd's.
you can try this otherwise too. or you can always delete/update/reinstall your drivers.

I built my own P4 system which has a DVD-ROM drive and a CD-RW drive. My DVD-ROM drive has no CD sound, either. But, my CD-RW drive has sound when I play CDs. Each drive has a small audio cable that usually runs from the drive to your sound card. Hence, I have two small audio cables...one coming from the DVD-ROM and one from the CD-RW.

Well, there is one primary connector on my SB Live 5.1! card. I believe my CD-RW drive is connected to it so it works. However, there is an AUX connector that I thought I could plug the audio cable from the DVD-ROM drive to. It fits nicely [IMG]. However, it does not work so I guess this is not right. Then, there was another digital audio cable coming from the DVD-ROM drive so I plugged that in to a digital connector on the sound card where it fit. Still, no sound when playing CDs. However, when I play a DVD in the DVD-ROM drive, it works with sound.

So, I don't know...I'm smart enough to build my own machines but those damn drive audio cables are pissing me off. Ideally, I should be able to play CDs in both drives and get...music. However, this continues to be my wish...I guess. I'm wondering if I can run two audio cables to my sound card...it doesn't appear it is set up to handle two audio connections from two different drives. I dunno.

rocketHEAD...check your cable...it may have come loose.

    LOL

Rockhead -- you already got the answer.

The main cable for the CD ROM is a ribbon type cable, which looks like the one attached to the 3.5" floppy drive. For audio CD's, it uses a much smaller, thin cable that looks kind of like the short wire you use to attach a wall phone to the wall. It hooks the CD rom directly to the sound card, and has a tendency to come loose.

ROCKhead -- thought I'd add, if your computer was built for you, or you added / replaced the CD rom, it might not have that cable. I found out about this with my CD burner, that had instructions for the cable, but no cable. You can buy one at Microcenter.
