I'm considering joining the American Civil Liberties Union, but I'm not really sure what the upside is, or if there's any kind of downside. Can anyone enlighten the board on these things or just personal experiences?
Don't think that protecting my civil liberties is political, but thanks for demonstrating one of the cons. Good question. Is Hakeem a member? So what's your impression?
If you join the ACLU expect to get tons of mail soliciting donations from groups ranging from Sierra Club to the DNC. They share donor lists with each other (same goes for conservative groups).
If you believe in the cause you should join. The level of expectation from members is only as much as you can give. The upside is that you are supporting an organization you believe in. The downside is that some super right wing individuals might say you are part of a hate group. As an additional upside, if you are single and heavily involved in a political group at a local level, you increase the changes of meeting other single people who share similar ideals.
What's to say? I like the little to read the update articles and such. I approach it as a charity. Nothing more.
Ah, so you get tagged as a lefty. I donated to some sick children's charity last year and now my recycle bin gets a healthy dose of solicitations. I honestly don't understand the hate group part. But then again, people who believe propaganda on either side are in a dream world anyway.
I was targeted by a recruiter near West Hollywood. he hooked me with his greeting and went into his scripted speech on supporting gay rights and the ACLU. almost immediately, he dropped the words "religion" and "christians" into his pre-approved dialogue and it caught me a bit off guard. even though I agree with what he is saying and doing, I don't think the organization should be sending their lowest level members into the streets with a scripted anti-religion agenda. there's no way anyone is get to get me to give them my credit card on the streets anyway.
