How does acquisition of the exception work? For example, the suggested trade that would have sent Outlaw to the Rockets was in exchange for the exception. Outlaw is an unsigned FA... so what benefit would that trade afford to the Magic? This trade doesn't make sense, or does it?!? ------------------ Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning? - Dubyah in Florence, SC. 01/11/2000
I'm no cap guru on anything, but this is how I see it. Outlaw has bird rights with the Magic; so when he signs with them they can go over the cap. But then they trade him to Houston for a scrub and exception. The exception allows them to go below the cap. I think. ------------------
In a Bo Outlaw sign-n-trade, the Magic would be going down in salary and that would generate a trade exception for them as long as they were over the salary cap. The trade exception would be for the net amount they went down in salary. They could then use this tade exception + some additional players in a sign-n-trade deal with Detroit for G Hill. Orlando gets the trade exception out of the deal rather than just renouncing players to clear cap space. Mango ------------------ 1. Put new topics in the proper forum 2.
