    4 seconds?

    strike 1 -> strike 2 = 2 seconds (for 2 o'clock)
    strike 2 -> strike 3 = 2 more seconds (for 3 o'clock)

    It'll take 00:59:58 to start striking 3 o'clock, and plus the three seconds it takes to finish striking 3 o'clock, so 01:00:01

    The answer is 4 SECONDS.....

    At 2 o'clock, takes two secs, so *gong* 2 secs *gong*

    Thus, at 3, it's *gong* 2 secs *gong* 2 secs *gong*.

    I still gotta disagree. From the beginning of the first gong to the end of the last gong (at 2 o'clock) was two seconds. So, for 3 o'clock, you merely add another second for the third gong..... I think, let's see.

    At 2 o'clock the 2 secs start here -->*gong* pause *gong*<-- ends here

    At 3 o'clock -->*gong* pause *gong* (still only 2 secs) pause *gong*<-- end.

    I don't see how it could possibly be 4 seconds. Because the first two seconds consist of two gongs and a pause, while the last two seconds consist of one gong and a pause???? Nope, don't work.

    If each gong and pause are the same length of time, then the time it takes 3 o'clock to gong would be a ratio of 5:3, or .667 seconds per hour (not counting 1 o'clock which would be .333 seconds). Therefore, the time it takes to strike 3 o'clock should be 3.33 seconds.

    Dreamer, you're overthinking. lol!

    If it takes 2 seconds between 1 and 2, then you've defined the interval between gongs. To gong 3 times, you have 2 such intervals.

    Therefore :

    1 -> 2 = 2 seconds
    2 -> 3 = 2 seconds

    Think of it as the starter's pistol going off in a race. The first gong starts the clock, the 2nd gong defines the interval between 2 consecutive gongs, and from the second to the third gong is a division of time equal to the length between the first and 2nd gong.

    ... i like the word "gong"... GONG! GONG! GONG! GONG! weeee! [IMG]

    Im with Dreamer on this one, except I see the answer as 3 seconds-

    Wouldnt the first interval be between 0 (or 12) and 1. I thought that was always how clocks worked. In which case you would have:

    *gong* 1 second *gong* 1 second *gong*

    where the first gong represents the clock starting, the second represents it hitting 1 oclock and the third it hitting two oclock (instead of above where it is the second gong signifying 2 oclock). Perhaps I am making it too complicated also though??

    I understand the logic, I just think that in a clock it would be the 4th gong and not the 3rd gong that represents 3 oclcok

    It is impossible for two gongs and a pause to equal one gong and a pause. It just doesn't WORK!

    *gong* + *gong* + *pause* (cannot equal) *gong* + *pause*

    Unless, you're trying to say that a *gong* takes no time, which again is impossible.

    It all depends on the clock. Some clocks have a longer pause than the gong, and some clock have longer gongs, than pauses....

    I like the word GONG too!

    Time to do some math

    gong+pause+gong = 2 seconds

    we need to find:

    gong+pause+gong+pause+gong

    Assuming a gong is equal to a pause then it takes .67 (2/3) seconds per gong or pause.

    Therefore gong+pause+gong+pause+gong = 3.33 (10/3) seconds.

    A gong takes time, and a pause takes time.

    We need to know the gong/pause ratio in order to get the REAL answer.

    [IMG]

    ----------------

    Well I thought about it some more and I can see how 4 seconds can be an answer. [IMG]

    gong+pause= 2 seconds

    the second gong duration doesn't matter since we think a clock strikes 2 at the beginning of the 2nd gong.

    Still assuming a gong has equal duration to a pause, then it's 1 second per gong or pause.

    So we need to find out:

    gong+pause+gong+pause

    No need for the 3rd gong since it's duration doesn't matter.

    Then that means gong+pause+gong+pause = 4 seconds.

    DAMNIT!

    ---------------

    Oh well, I guess the info I made at the beginning of my post is useless, but I'm going to leave it there b/c I spent too much time figuring that part out to just delete it w/o anyone seeing how in depth I took the stupid riddle.
