i didn't really want to hijack anyone's thread so sorry about making another one. i have a pc that will always freeze at the Windows xp screen. that progress bar that's supposed to be always moving, will just stop and nothing will happen. when it did load to the desktop, i tried restoring to another save point but that's doesn't seem to fix the problem. now it jsut never gets passed teh windows xp screen. help, please.

btw, i've googled the problem and alot of suggestions consisted of using Windows xp start up disc. the problem is i don't have one. :(

Try booting into safe mode and pray that it works. To boot into safe mode hit f8 when the computer initially turns on. (that would be the screen that says dell, gateway, or whatever company made your computer)

If you are successful, run the command prompt. (to do this go to start-->run and then type in cmd)

In the command prompt type in chkdsk /r and if it asks you any questions hit yes (y button) and hopefully that will fix your problem.

if you cant boot into safe mode, you will need to boot of a cd and that usually means a windows cd. (or a bootable OS like Bart PE) Also, beyond a chkdsk, if you have a windows cd you can also do a repair install which also might fix your problem.

Basically what geeimsobored said, sorry macalu, you're probably going to need that windows xp startup disc to solve it, from my experience you need to use the disc to go into "repair" installation mode and then simply type fixboot in the command prompt to solve the bootup, any startup disc will do.

You're asking if you have to buy another sound card, and that to me means that you can open up your machine. This also means that you can see where the pin made contact inside the computer to the INPUT part of the sound card. You can then get the pin out and will need to buy new headphones, but not a new sound card. You did say "the mother board", not the one on the front of the PC, right?

Sounds like you have on board sound. It's pretty difficult to remove a stuck pin, and there really is no way to "re configure outputs" as the type of output is pretty much hardwired (that is, unless you want to take out a soldering iron...)

I suggest buying a cheap sound card, popping it in and using it.
