betcha he mentions the "p" word in every song. I am talking about party. We had a substitute in grade school who pronounced party as pottie. It was funny.
First off, WK not corporate? Big beefy hard rock guy sings party anthems to...ahem...rock your balls. Every hook is catchy. Not a chord out of place. I mean, Judas Priest wasn't corporate. Iron Maiden wasn't corporate. Slayer, Accept, Anthrax, any death metal band. They weren't corporate. Maybe this guy isn't N'Sync, but he isn't exactly Motorhead either. Second, how can it be both non-corporate AND lyrically simplistic? I mean, I know "Oops I did it again" and "I'm just Jenny from the block" are worthy of literary praise and, of course, who could forget "She's my cherry pie", but, generally speaking, lyrics are one of the few things that set artsy songwriters apart from their more corporate cousins. Not slamming AWK or anything. I'm sure if you are yearning for the 80's, popping on one of his CD's, throwing on a pair of acid washed jeans (with holes pre-ripped), sipping on a Corona while remembering how you knew about Dokken way before anyone else did, well, WK will do the trick. The guy definitely has that stuff down pat. But, not corporate? I don't think so. <i><font size="1">Disclaimer: I actually DID listen to Dokken before they were popular (which lasted all of 5 minutes...Alooooooone again without youuuuu) and I was TOTALLY into metal when I was in high school. I used to tape Night Flight on USA (no, not the wussie new wave version...the heavy metal one) and Headbanger's Ball (I still have Vandenberg and Keel videos on tape somewhere, God help me). I knew every guitar player and his hard rock pedigree (betcha didn't know that Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen each held the guitar spot for Alcatrazz (not a misspelling) as their first real rock outfit - Vai after Zappa and Yngwie right after his first band in the US, Steeler, with the aforementioned Ron "Keel" on vocals (I actually still own that record) - God, do I really know all this?). So, this is not a slam of AWK. Just a lighthearted jab from someone who knew what it meant to have his...ahem...balls rocked.</font></i>
Yes or Pantera. Andrew W.K.'s CD is one of my favorites and I don't care about his lyrics. It is just an insanely fun album to listen to!
Night Flight! yes! I used to have about 10 Beta tapes full of NF...cant figger out what happened to them, or how I would play em if I could find em.. I do in fact have about 15 gigs of videos on my computer..and still watch them...think maybe I live in the past a little? After reading your disclaimer, I'm convinced you would have fit right in with our little circle back in the day..we used to spend more time at parties talking about bands/musicians than we did drinking.. oh god, did I just admit all of this publicly??
That's one of the funnest albums I've ever heard! It's especially good for listening when you're training for a marathon: "You gotta keep up. You gotta keep going. No you never let down. You gotta keep going." I'll tack on a recommendation while I'm at it. Anyone here a big Rancid fan? If so, I recommend the album by the Transplants. It's a collaboration between Tim Armstrong (Rancid's lead singer), guys from Blink-182, and several other punk rockers and MCs. It's a pretty cool blend of punk-rock and rap.
Hmmmmmmmm. I guess I have a different definition of corporate. For me its the same mundane rap-metal whatever you want to call it that keeps getting recycled over and over again (for the past 4 years or so). WK in my opinion wrote a cool ROCK album, that was definitely not what people are listening to right now, something different. Sure he pays homage to glam and other rock generes, but for me its just a damn fun album to throw on when you want to just rock out. I guess putting his music to commercials makes him corporate. Bad wording late last night on my part. Also, thanks for the refrence of the guy at Bungalow. I had my friend give him a call, but Im not sure as to what he is going to do yet. DD
What was really funny was that he got suckered into making fun of himself on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart this week. They had some Christian nut going on about how horrible today's youths are and they were discussing the rise of abstinence and decrease of drinking and doing drugs in high school kids (not that it's a bad thing), so they interviewed Andrew W.K. He said it sucked that kids weren't having fun any more and read the lyrics to "It's Time to Party" (I think that's the name of the song). After which, the interviewer said, "Do you think, if you'd have just added one more party, everything would be OK?"

I have to admit to knowing the above and not only that I can tell you that good ole' Ron Keel is now known as Ronny Lee Keel and is singing country music somewhere now. I used to love Vai (even the ill fated Whitesnake project). Malmsteen was technically good but I didnt like his singers. Just when I thought I was the master of useless 80's metal knowledge a challenger emerges. Rockken With Dokken.

Try Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age. Now that's a refreshing rock album in these times of bland boring corporate crap.
AMEN!!! One of the best albums to come out in the last few years. Dave Grohl is a badass on that album too. Cripez!
I agree Drew, WK definitely isn't corporate. There is not a single thing out there right now that sounds ANYTHING like I GET WET. If there is, I need to know about it, and FAST. Saw him in Austin a couple of months ago, didn't see you there Drew. He puts on an amazing show. The thing with WK, is I don't think it's an act. He's just being himself.
Damn, I forgot about the original "metal master" on this BBS. I am but a young padawan compared to you. Maybe one day if I keep playing those old Tesla CD's I can gain the true knowledge.
I just now noticed your sig Freak. Nice work.... Just realized that he plays all the instruments on the album, much like Lenny Kravitz does. I respect the hell out of any musician that can write and record an album solo playing all of their own instruments.....
