It's not the world's lungs, but it is the world's freakshow. There's so much genetic diversity there that could open up wide range of research. It's also a nice insurance policy when biomes are collapsing elsewhere. I find it sad that rich pipo can drop 2.5 billion on a burnt down French cathedral and not focus the same effort for prevention, conservation, and restoration.
