Just ticks me off because these two guys probably know nothing about the Astros and our history. I don't think that Ashby should be the play by play, but in the aspect that he knows quite a bit about the Astros and baseball as he at least played it was nice to listen to him. This just messes this offseason up even more.
Ash would question Phil Garner's moves sometimes. He wasn't a complete homer. I wonder if that had something to do with it. I liked Ash and this is a stunning event. Milo needs to hang it up. They got rid of the wrong guy.
Two entirely different situations. Please prove your accusations that Ash was fired because he wasn't a complete homer. You guys act like he wasn't a homer at all, which just wasn't the case. Billy Wagner trashed the organization, you can't do that and expect to stay here.
I just read Dierker's autobiography, "It ain't brain surgery." On a side note, it's a great book if you're a baseball and specifically an Astros fan. Great stories about guys like Gonzo, Cheo (Jose Cruz), Rader, etc. Didn't speak of any rift between Dierk and Milo. He did say he likes to give Milo sh*t every now and then. One time in the booth, Dierk was wearing a hawaiin shirt and the shirt had a bunch of old cars on it, including an old station wagon from the 50's with the wood panneling on the side. Well they used to call those cars "woodies." Dierk baited Milo into saying the word "woodie" about 30 times that night. Including this imortal exchange: Milo: "My family was to poor for a woodie when I was a kid" Dierker (trying to hide laughter): Wow! You guys must have been pretty poor!" They seem to be friends and according to HIS book, Dierk respects the hell out of Milo.
Thats what I thought. Granato gives the impression that there is alot of bad blood there and that he trashes Dierker in his book along with Harry Caray.
It sucks that the Astros dumped Ashby...who was been so loyal to the Astros over many years. His heart was in it and I feel for him. I have to look at the Astros management with a tilted eyebrow and wonder "Dicks?".
In 2004 there was a game where Ash was talking about Doug Rader hitting golf balls in the clubhouse (don't remember how they got on that topic). Anyway, Milo said that he was sure Norm Miller remembered that. Ash then said that Larry Dierker would also remember it. Milo then said something like - "Yeah, but I would trust Miller to remember it more accurately." Ash then changed the subject back to that day's game.
Ashby quoted as being, "devastated." Now, that's just wrong. Alan Ashby is a Houston Astros icon. Maybe I'm just old school....I want the 80's orange or rainbow unis back. I hate this crappy red color we've got now. We're not the fricken Cincinnati Reds. Give us our Astros colors back. And what'd you do that to Ashby for. Almost as bad as trading Cassell and Horry. Worst move ever.
I really liked Ashby. I liked it when Milo would leave the booth, or atleast stop playing and Ashby would take over for an inning of so. (can't remember how long exactly) Sucks he's gone. These new guys better be good.
Personally, the Red jersey is the best looking one, followed by the road uniform. Also, I really like our logo and color scheme now. It looks a heck of a lot better than the rainbow uni's or even the previous logo/scheme.
I like Ash, I really do. I would have really liked to see him stay on and take over PBP duties in 2007. However, some people seem to be overreacting a bit. I swear the guy who was on 610 about 10 minutes ago was about two seconds away from tears.
I think people connected with the guy because of our teams in the 80's. Im not completely devastated because I watch most of the games on TV, but its kind of insulting IMO to be replaced by some chump minor league scrubs who have no affiliation with our team. Its like a bad breakup......
