anti.... I know what you mean.. I have had a lot of work to do...

had to basically pull one on monday night in order to finish a philosophy paper and a bunch of lab work etc..

that was a bad night.. it got worse when at 9 oclock I got an email from the lab instructor announcing a quiz the next day!

Sorry Antisonic. As an EE major I can feel your pain, as I too have spent my college days with countless all-nighters. I personally know the security guard who works the late-night shift at PCL (main library at UT).

Once on a Saturday night, I was cramming for a Solid State Electronics exam worth 35% at PCL, in the corner of the 6th floor. I was so into my studying that I forgot that they lock the doors and midnight. Since I had my headphones on I didn't hear the announcements that they were closing. I got up to get a drink of water and saw a row of lights had been turned on. I called my friend and he said "dude, PCL closes at midnight!" I started panicking and finally I found a back door exit that worked.

I do have one story to share. I've told this here before, but here it is again.

We had a feasibility study due on Thurs. Now this thing has to be around 50-75 pages I think. Me and my partner had not done crap till Wed. He comes to my house Wed 9:00 am. We get started and told each other we should be done by 6:00 pm and we were feeling pretty good about it. Well soon its 6:00pm and we told each other maybe 10:00 pm. Okay okay maybe 2:00am. 4:00am? :( Crap it will be time for class soon! 8:00 am? 10:00am is when we got done!!!! 24-25 straight hours! :( Got to school be eleven and made a presentation and then fell asleep in class!

I tried an all-nighter once when I was in college. I thought it was the thing to do, so I loaded up on No-Doz and coffee and stayed awake all night long, studying for an architecture test which started at 9:30.

Around 7 AM, I decided to shower and go down and have breakfast. When I got back, stuffed and beginning to tire out, I decided to kill some time. There wasn't much to do in my dorm room-- I had a single, since I'd semi-intentionally driven my roommate crazy and made him move out. I had studied all friggin' night-- there wasn't any point in studying further.

So I decided to sit down on the edge of my bed... my soft, comfortable bed... and listen to music.

You can see where this is heading. I awoke right at 9:30, took eight seconds to get my bearings, and then sprinted to the Music Building (now called Rainey Hall) which luckily was right across the street from my dorm.

I wrote three of the most incoherent, idiotic essays of my life and trudged back to my dorm room to sleep.

And I never tried an all-nighter again-- well, not for the purpose of studying, at least.

LOL! My worst fear in college: oversleeping for an exam. I always organized wake up calls from multiple classmates. During finals, I would make my mom give me a wakeup call from Sugar Land.

I think that everyone has this fear. I have even had dreams about it. Thats why I use a three alarm system. One next to the bed, and two across the room. I always wake up on the first one but there is always a chance.

    AntiSonic,
I feel your pain. I had to pull and all nighter on Sunday to write a paper. Worst thing is on Mon. my 1st class is at 8 and my last ends at 3. Every time I do this, I say its the last time I ever procrastinate.

Also I think pulling all nighters for tests are much worse than papers. When you finish the paper you can relax. With the test you have to worry about performing without any sleep.

    Good Luck tommorow,

All through college and law school I NEVER slept the night before an exam. Regardless of how much prep I had done before I never could bring myself to go to bed the night before an exam...including when I was exhausted.

There were semesters in college where I would have exams on 4 days in a row. I would get home from the exam take a 3 hour nap (wake up by 2 or 3pm)...and study all night for the next one. I was SO tired right after that round of exams.

One time I had 2 buddies who studied with me in one of their dorm room. We didn't have the same classes, but we figured it would be a comfy place we could all study with a few breaks to talk. When it got really late and people got tired we started tag team sleeping. One of us would fall asleep for 15 to 20 minutes...the other 2 guys would then wake him up and the second guy had his nap turn. Once all 3 had gotten a powernap, no sleeping for 2 hours...then we repeated the cycle. It worked like a charm. Too bad that guy was assigned a new roommate the next semester.

You probably know this already, but a good way to get the main ideas out of a lot material you have to read in a short period of time is to target certain parts of the text. Closely read the introduction, conclusion and the first and last parts of each chapter. The rest you can skim by reading the first and last sentences of each paragraph to keep the flow of the evidence and narrative. This is a particularly useful method in academic texts.

All-nighters are the thing to do in college. The only thing that sucks is when you start feeling light-headed and dizzy right before the test. So, you fly through the exam, not giving a rats ass, just to get the test over with so you can go home and hit the sack.

ahh...how wonderful sleep is...maybe I should get my ass in bed. Its 4:07 am. Of course, I could play one more game of Madden on my PS2...

Thanks for the support, guys. :)

Well, I aced the History test. He gave us seventy-five review questions and only 20 showed up on the test(most in TRUE/FALSE format, no less). I feel kind of jipped.

The Art History one kicked my ass though. I spent the entire night absorbing all I could from the text, but it turned out we were quizzed over a slideshow.

Oh well, I'll be better prepared next time. (yeah, as always. ;) )

Could never do that, but I do see the logic. Sometimes an all-nighter is better than getting 2 hours of sleep.
