Actually yes, they are mutually exclusive, unfortunately. Because an outright ban on abortions flys in the face of constitutionally protected rights and the supreme court agrees. So which one of us shall be Darth Vador and which one is Skywalker? I support the premise of your cause but I don't support your strategy. That is why I am proposing a way to have a better end result (since your solution only applies to America and my solution is global) without any debates about constitutionality.
Preventing unwanted pregnancies and keeping unborn babies alive are not mutually exclusive. You seem to want to obligate MadMax to do the former if he is going to do the latter, why not vice-versa? I say do what your heart tells you...
despite my 20K plus posts here, i don't consider this my "activism" in the world. i work with groups like this: http://fifthward.org/
I never claimed to be Pro-life and would prefer not to be associated with groups dedicated to reducing the rights of Americans. We can accomplish arguabely better results and do it in a way that is consistent with the American spirit. I guess we have two options. 1. Fight to take rights away from Americans and ensure more babies are born into our world. 2. Fight to sustain rights for Americans and ensure that babies are not born into undesirable family environments by preventing unwanted pregnancies.
It was a joke, geez. Lighten up. I'm hoping that since we all have the same ultimate goal that we can remain civilized. Two entrenched sides yelling back and forth accomplishes nothing except inciting violence...which is counter-productive.
This sounds like an excellent organization helping people in need. It would be wonderful if this type of organization could also assist "at risk" children BEFORE they got pregnant too. I know the topic of contraceptives is definately contraversial but there are other ways to help kids besides contraceptives, if that is your beleif. Just as long as they are getting attention from caring people, that's probably the first step.
Quit lying. Let's just admit that we only care about people from the time of conception until birth. Anybody who has already been born can go sit on a sharp stick as far as we are concerned.
Well, sorta, but with all due respect, the organization you linked does not appear to make that a focus. And this is my point. I hear VERY little about reducing pregnancy rates...particularly as part of a larger movement. It just isn't a focus. Yes, people mention it but I just don't see comprehensive programs with action plans dedicated to the cause. Something where people rally around and really bring attention to the subject. I just don't see it. When I was in school, I remember lectures about smoking and drinking. I remember Sex Ed week in health class...and that was a joke. That's about it. This could all be done without challenging the constitution.
I know...it has a different focus...dealing with women AFTER they are pregnant. That's good, too. Each job is important. The American Heart Associtation doesn't deal with either. Google for the type of programs/groups you're talking about. You'll find many. Some of which receive federal funding.
Along with currently available facts. You can support such legislation if you like, but keep in mind that if such legislation passes (highly unlikely given the current statistics on abortion opinions), all it will do is put an ineffective, counterproductive law on the books that will cause more harm than good and will not stop abortions at all.
The argument that I always hear from the pro-lifers is adoption, namely that there are countless numbers of people who would adopt if they had the opportunity. Harvesting fetuses would be a way that both camps could have their way. The woman could be free from having to use her womb to bear a child (and would give up all parental rights as well) and the people who want to adopt would find the process much easier. Of course, by the time we can harvest and artificially bring a child to term, we should also have much more effective contraception options, which would lower abortion rates.
Where is the challenge to the Constitution coming from? Isn't this mostly about reversing a 30-year old law?
Except that one "team" is working for a law that would not solve the stated problem and would cause a whole host of others in the mane of having an ineffective law on the books criminalizing abortion. You may not see one strategy or "team" as "better" than the other, but I do.
Well, of course, so do I but I was willing to keep my prejudice out of it. This is like everyone getting a trophy just for participating in keepting tragedy at bay. Don't tell me you're not willing to work to prevent unwanted pregnancy just becaue some other "team" wants to remove abortion for the sake of convenience from the menu?
i would like to point out that Fifth Ward Pregnancy Center intentionally does not make political stances. they are about loving the women through a very tough time. that's it. and if the woman chooses an abortion, they'll love her through that and provide free counseling for dealing with it. these are the same Jesus Freaks who get called out for being too conservative...and whom others say really don't exist, because it's easier to assume that those who think differently are really maniacal and bad.
