Any Grey owners here? I've had cockatiels in the past, but would like to move up to an African Grey in the near future. What is the best way to purchase one in the Houston area?
stopped reading. but seriously. When you buy one of these, given their long lifespan, do you buy a baby or perhaps one that is already 10, 20 or 30 years old?
lol... Ideally I'd like a younger one, simply because I like to train birds. However, I'd assume an older Grey would easily pick up new vocabulary simply because these birds are one of the smartest ones around.
They pick 1 person to get along with amicably, the rest are just bitting toys, lol. I moved in with my fiancee right when they got an African Gray and we both took a liking. They are smart, need a lot of room, and a bunch of bird amusement shiet. Anything you say or they hear is up for them to repeat, don't do nothing the good lord wouldn't want you to do All in all, it's awesome. He makes me look like a G on my shoulder. He regurgitates for me, Do Not Want. The only thing is cleaning after a bird, but you got that so yeah, do it.
If the person is confident that they'll be able to pet it, then they will. They do bite if the vibe isn't right, but people will be amused for sure. If it's flying around(loose) when people are around, it's open season. clip wings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have an awesome gate.
I had a cockatiel when I was younger damn thing lived to be 23 years old. Smart as hell - we would just leave his cage open and he would roam around the house. Could say many words and phrases -- he could also whistle the bridge over the river Kwai start to finish. About a year ago a friend of mine asked if I wanted her African Grey. She had two already and the new bird was jealous of the other birds and started pulling its tail feathers out (first sign of grey stress). I'm in and out of the house too much and figured leaving the bird alone so much would have been a bad decision. I turned her down, but I really did want that bird. They are definitely one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. They are right up there with dolphins, chimps, and other great apes as far as brain power goes in the animal kingdom.
Got a Timneh African Grey over the weekend. Do you feed it a pellet diet, and if so, what brand do you use? The previous owner did not have enough time to care for the bird and frankly did not know much about birds. I will transition the bird to a pellet diet over time, but don't want to spend tons of money finding the right brand. Thanks.
