I have been wearing contacts for 10+ years and have been thinking about getting lasik surgery the past 5 years, but was wondering does your current eye sight determine the price of the lasik? I mean does someone with an eye sight for 6.5 have to pay more than someone that's 2.0? or is it a set price for the procedure. Does anybody know any good places right now in Houston and what are the current prices? I've heard from $888 per eye to $1500 per eye Has anyone done it recently thanks
I don't know anything about the prices, but I know that you shouldn't skimp on the cash when choosing a doctor. Screwing up your eyes is worse than spending an extra grand.
My deal is, what if I'm that 1 out of 10,000 that ends up with worse eye sight? And by the time you're in your 40's to 50's you'll most likely still need reading glasses. I'll keep my 20/15 w/contacts.
they actually have solved that with an experimental crystalline material that helps focusing. I know people who have had the operation and no longer need reading glasses. They are well over 60. btw, it's still in the experimental phase, so you'll probably have to look around at universities to find the procedure, but by the time you become 50 (which i assume is in 10+ years), the procedure should be common.
I had lasik about a year and 3 months ago. Price varies if you need a custom job. Mine was $1998 for both eyes. best money i ever spent. This is the guy i went to. Dr. Glenz
does your current eye sight determine the price of the lasik? no I mean does someone with an eye sight for 6.5 have to pay more than someone that's 2.0? or is it a set price for the procedure. yes since it is your eyes, don't cheap out on it, a bad doc won't make you blind but will raise the chance of having other complications. five people in my family had it done, including myself and we all agree its the best thing we've ever done for ourselves.
what places did you go to and what do you look for when going to a doctor? a bunch of places have free observations where you get info and like a consultation. should you check out as many as you can and see which doc you like? and go from there? what are the steps? please help... i've been thinking about it too and my eyes are horrible!! 6.75 with major astigmatism (sp?) so i don't even know if it's doable. i can't wear soft lenses and have been wearing RGP for 15 years come next Monday. thanks for starting the thread, i've been thinking the same thing lately.
OMG, Dr. Glenz ....he used to be at the Today's Vision over near Willowbrook .....my wife and I went in there to get glasses and contacts about 4 years ago .....my wife was getting fitted for her contacts and everything was going ok with her left contact ...but when they put the right contact in, her eye turned red, started to swell and she was complaining about it hurting really bad ...so they tried another contact, and boom, same thing ..so Dr. Glenz, without warning, litterally plucks both contacts out, throws them in the trash can next to the table and says "sorry, I don't think we can help you ...you might want to try some other place" and walks out of the room and screams to the secretary ..."don't charge them for anything ..they are going to go some place else" we were speechless ......
Had mine 5 years ago and it's was great, I'm over 50 now so my eyes are getting myopic and I have to use reading glasses but no biggie, I still drive and watch TV without glasses. I could never wear contacts, I couldn't get through the discomfort. Also, the surgery is absolutely painless. I squirmed right up till they did it , but it was nothin'.
i was going to get it, and still think about it. however, when i was in college (i went to MIT), i took a class in vision. and my professor said, and i kid you not "I'm not going to let anyone burn tissue off my eye". here's a man i respected very much, that studied vision all day long, telling me he doesn't care for lasik. if there's a small chance that something goes wrong (halos, ruined appearance etc), I'll stick to my normal glasses and contacts. Plus, as was mentioned before, you're going to need glasses when you get older anyhow.
Best advice here, dont cheap out on it. I would at least pay 2k+ and make sure the place Im at uses the latest lasik technology. I've heard of a few horror stories that'll keep me away for at least another 5 years until the success rate really is 99%. I know a guy who flew to Japan just to have this procedure done. He did this because Japan has the latest/best technology and he didn't think it was worth the risk doing it here.
I had lasik several years ago. Here's something I didn't count on: cataracts. I got one in my left eye about a year ago, I'm guessing from the sun since I'm only in my early 40's. The problem is because of the lasik surgery, the doctor who put the new lens in had a harder time calculating the proper lens prescription in my eye. So now the vision in my left eye isn't near as good as it used to be. One thing I do notice is how the colors look better, clearer to me in that eye because of the new lens. In my right eye there is just a hint of yellow. My reading vision also sucks in my left eye. I also have problems with my night vision, likely because of my large pupils. Getting rid of contacts was a beautiful thing, but would I do it all over again? I'm not sure. As mentioned, find a reputable doctor. Don't look for a bargain.
so what exactly happen? was something wrong with the contacts? i used to go to that Todays Vision. That guy sounds scary.
my mom was thinking about getting this done, but her doctor advised her that since she's over 50, it wouldnt be a good idea. But personally, I'm scared of all surgeries, so i would never get it done. But thankfully, my eyesight isn't that bad. Good Luck on whichever path you choose young grasshopper.
I am thinking about getting mine too. Here is my question. My eyesights have gone bad steadily and considerably over the years, and I am still in my early 20s. So, if I get the surgery, will my eyesight be stablized after that? If not, after a few years, don't I have to get glasses/contacts/surgery again? Someone please help!
