Why? What do you have against Jesus, in a Christmas video produced by a Christian organization? Could it be that in your bigoted alternate universe, good things somehow become bad because they are being promoted by Christians?
I don't think it's a personal attack on Jesus or Christians, just that seeing morality tied to Jesus exclusively is not really something everyone likes. It's implied that you should worship Jesus fully to be moral (it starts with worship), which is something you'd expect a Christian organization to say...it's just not something that appeals to everybody.
I still don't get it. It's a video about Christmas. Produced by a Christian organization. And he basically says the only reason why it isn't a good video is because it mentions Jesus. What the heck? Christmas IS a celebration of the birth of Jesus. People just don't realize how intolerant they are sometimes.
Ironically enough, your second sentence gets right to the problem. Yes, it is a Christian organization and yes it is a video about Christmas so it is expected, but that doesn't mean the preaching that comes with the video is something that everyone likes. The idea framed behind it is something good, if a little bit overused (please stop consuming and start donating to x cause). However, the framing it is cast in will cause some dissent, since it pretty much alienates people of no faith or of other faiths who have similar moral tenets but are not going to church or worshiping Jesus.
real charity. dismiss your predisposition about religion, its a pretty good ad. this agnostic sometimes gets frustrated with religion ... but they do have a body of charitable work to recommend them. for me the video isn't controversial, wanna place your $'s effectively or no? 'course, great thing about charity, is the ability to choose. its your $s after all ... Happy holidays all!
Doesn't everything about Christmas alienate those who don't believe in Jesus? Since the video is about Christmas, the intended audience is the group of people that believe in what Christmas is about.
Not the secularized version of Christmas. The one where we are all consumer whores, sad as it may be. For the majority of people, that means Santa Claus and presents...an example; China celebrates Christmas similarly to how we do in the West. The large majority of the country isn't Christian and I would argue that there are more atheists there then those who believe in Jesus. Yet the secular version of Christmas is still tolerable, even to a government that represses Christianity. I wish more people would realize that in framing messages of this caliber, and in attempting to appeal to all people, that preaching and saying things like "it starts with worship to Jesus" will alienate some people. Yes, the majority of Americans are Christian to some degree but the minority also carries some importance. Mankind is a brotherhood and religion shouldn't have so much importance over an initiative like this. Wouldn't this be also a worthy cause for Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, Atheists, Agnostics, Hindus, Sikhs etc.? Why would you turn them off by saying "it starts with worship to Jesus?"
Whether or not you believe in religion, I would hope that everyone could respect and in fact embrace the message that Jesus taught, that is the most important thing about him, his message. DD
Of course it would be a worth cause for other religions, too. This is a Christian message. Since we have free speech in this country (not sure what the policy is in the 51st state up north...), each of the religions is welcome to put out a message like this. I haven't seen any from the other religions you mentioned.
that was a refreshing video and reminder of what the holiday season should be about. even for a bitter Grinch like me.
It's called Advent Conspiracy. It's about Christmas. It's participated in by churches..this is a message to churches. It's about meaning in Christmas.
They're free to put messages like this up there (and it is a good message). I'm not questioning that at all. I'm just saying that by framing it into a religious viewpoint, certain people will get put off...and that ruins the original intent of the video. I'm sure many atheists have money to burn as well. I mean, could you imagine a Muslim ad that said "it all begins with worship to Allah?". They're free to do it but come on, you have to agree with me that that isn't the best way to appeal to everyone. I could understand if this initiative were something small and local, but we're talking about a global commitment. I'd like to see everyone welcomed into this instead of there being a prerequisite of "worship of Jesus" and "going to Church".
