the first two years of acl (02-03) i had a nice little scam going w/ my ticket - when you buy your ticket and they mail it to you it was the ticket and the receipt, which was printed out on a different ticket - so at the gate i accidentally gave them the receipt and they took it and gave me a wristband, so i went out and sold my real ticket. second year i thought what the hell, i will try again and sure enough it worked. so again, i sold my real ticket. 3rd year i got called on it.
Best show of the weekend - Frank Turner on the Austin Ventures stage early Sunday. It was a small crowd to start, but the energy he brought just kept attracting people as they walked by. It was an awesome show. He just f***ing rocked. Reminds me a lot of Ike Reilly. Before that I saw Ted Leo. Not as good as the last time they were here. Maybe because it was too early. Trombone Shorty was awesome...much like Rebirth Brass Band in the same time and stage slot last year. He only gets points for being from Houston, but Devendra Banhart was terrible. How does that get a main stage when Monsters of Folk or Trombone Shorty or Robert Randolph (etc, etc) are relegated to the smaller stages? The Flaming Lips were The Flaming Lips. Great music and a great stage show. I wasn't looking forward to The Eagles, but I'm glad I stayed. Sometimes you forget how good a band is and how many great songs they have until you see them live. Joe Walsh is just a phenomenal guitar player.
Not that I intended on seeing these guys, but this is hilarious... According to the owner of the bus company...
I happened to be walking by the stage they were supposed to be playing on when it was announced that they would not be performing "because their bus driver stole their bus." Big WTF moment from everyone around me.
My top 5 shows: 1. Flaming Lips - Any band that enters the stage through a pulsating vagina automatically gets the #1 spot. Couple that with the space ball, outrageous stage and impressive sound, then you get a great show. 2. Deadmau5 - Say what you want about DJs and the mouse head gimmick, he is one of the best in the biz. He brought out all of the stops, despite technical issues for the 2nd night in a row. And then there is his stage setup including and LED cube as a DJ booth and even an LED head! If you missed this show, you missed one of the best at this year's festival hands down. 3. Muse - They straight up rocked it! I was blown away by their show. It was loud and lit up rock star style. As someone that is only a moderate fan of their music, their show left me wanting more. 4. The Sword - I knew they'd bring it and they didn't let me down. It's just too bad that their drummer, Trivett Wingo, left the band within 48 hours of finishing their show. As a huge fan of theirs, I'm hoping the next guy can pickup where Wingo left off. 5. The Clear 4G stage - Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Beats Antique, Ozomatli (didn't see them, but they're awesome live) & Trombone Shorty. Every year this stage packs in some of the funkiest and entertaining shows and 2010 was as packed as any previous year.
watching trombone shorty on austin city limits and man am i pissed i didn't check them out. bet that was a fun show!
Was a great show. Any one get their tix for 2011? I decided not to go early bird this year and wait for the lineup. I'm sure I'll go. It would be hard to miss the 10th year after going to all 9 so far.
I'm telling you, that stage has some of the best shows every year. T-Bird and The Breaks was a fun show too (at BMI). They'll be at Stubb's with Galactic Halloween night. I wish I could make that show, but I'll be in HTown.
