Well the nominations will be announced tomorrow morning but CNN broke down the favorites before hand. I have been seeing a lot of support for Cohen in his performance of 'Borat' and I think it would be cool for him to even be nominated. I am really pulling for Eddie Murphy to win for his performance in Dreamgirls, if he gets nominated. Frontrunners
A decent year for films. I think Babel should win it for best picture. The Departed had a good story line, but I didn't like the cinematography or musical score. Pan's Labyrinth was a really good film, but don't think it will get a nomination. Fearless was also a favorite of mine. Borat, was def. my favorite comedy of the year. It had both the critical and public success, which films like The Queen hasn't. The worst movie I've seen all year was the Pursuit of Happyness. I thought Will Smith overacted that role, and it felt like a really sappy movie with stupid one liners that were supposed to give it a poignant touch. I havent seen Dreamgirls, so I assumed Eddie Murphy was getting nominated for Norbit.
I for one, thought it was a sh!tty year at the movies. For example I thought The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine, Children of Men, and Pan's Labyrinth were very good movies, but the only one that even got close to putting "Best Picture" in my head was The Departed. Yet, all 4 are in the discussion. Couldn't really care less who wins what this time around.
Yeah, every year keeps getting worse and worse. I saw maybe 5 new movies all year at the theater and only Borat and Casino Royale managed to either meet or exceed the hype. Little Miss Sunshine was cute, but it's vastly overrated. Still, I think it'll get a nod for Best Picture since that 5th slot is occasionally given to a crowd-pleasing comedy(i.e. Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Full Monty). United 93 should absolutely get a Best Picture nod(if not the trophy itself). But I have a feeling the Academy won't have the sack to go through with it. Paul Greengrass could get a Best Director nomination as a consolation though. Sasha Baron Cohen better get a Best Actor nod. He was obviously convincing in the role considering the number of people he fooled during filming who now wanna sue him.
I'm not quite sure I understand all the love for The Departed, given that (1) it's a REMAKE of a Japanese film and (2) seriously peters out after the big shootout scene. Granted, Scorcese doesn't ever lose track of the complicated plot (which I appreciated even more after watching The Good Shepherd, which had some of the sloppiest directing I've seen in awhile), but it's certainly not his best work. DiCaprio and Damon are the best things about the film but the other actors didn't do much in my opinion (especially Nicholson - who played himself AGAIN for the umpteenth time since 1975 - and Vera Farmiga - who had a terribly underwritten part). I agree that's good, but not great. I've spent the last year catching up on older classics, and doing so has made me appreciate just how few great films there actually are.
What score? The best thing about that film was Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin...pure comedy. But I agree, The Departed is overrated and ultimately pales in comparison to Infernal Affairs. Children of Men should definitely be considered.
it is ashame The Prestige won't get any recognition, probably the best film I saw this year. and I saw some damn good ones.
Problem is, Best Picture winners usually aren't the best pictures- not just from my personal opinion, but from a critical and longevity standpoint. Top 10 Best Best Picture Winners 1. I for one thought Apocalypto was one of sugartits the best films of the year. It just captured you from the very beginning sugartits and for the next 21/2 hours you were in an entirely different world at the hands of sugartits an extraordinary filmaker. Its a shame that it wont sugartits get any cred from the Academy. I can't imagine why?
Considering the jewish makeup of the Film Industry I'd say Hitler had a better chance at the Nobel Peace prize.
Yeah, Spanish and subtitled. It was...different. It felt a lot like 2 separate movies intertwined. As if a kid's fantasy movie happened inside a military movie. It was good though. Not great.
