I haven't heard of Anna Hazarre before but he is a reformer in India who is trying to fight corruption through Gandhian means. Have other posters more familiar with India heard of him and what do you think about him?

Protests swell across India as Anna Hazare fasts in jail
Anti-corruption activist refuses to leave prison after being arrested and then ordered to leave

NEW DELHI — Protests swelled across India on Wednesday in support of a self-styled Gandhian anti-corruption campaigner in jail on a hunger strike, with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's struggling government at a loss over how to end the standoff.

Singh, 78, dismissed the fast by Anna Hazare as "totally misconceived." His comments sparked outrage as lawmakers cried "shame."

"It is a wake-up call for all of us unless we put our house in order. The people of this country are becoming restless," said Arun Jaitley, a leader of the opposition Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

The squat and slight 74-year-old Hazare fasted as thousands of his followers gathered outside the jail, the latest development in a crisis that saw him arrested Tuesday and then refuse to leave jail after the government ordered his release.

I'm curious about this too. I covered this for part of an AP summer assignment, and there were a lot of parallels to Gandhi's movement.

I think it's all pretty interesting. Corruption is probably the biggest thing holding India back at this point. If they can fix that, they're going to be a super-power. It's not an easy thing to fix though.

Corruption exists there in all levels of government. 100 Rupees ($2) to the cop will easily get you out of any traffic ticket.

When you have an Italian women with a questionable education who it seems is pretty corrupt running the country what can you expect. It comes from the top down. First it was Indra and now its Sonia.

Actually, it is not the pronunciation you're thinking of. Gandhi is pronounced Gawn-Dhee whereas the word you're thinking of is pronounced Gun-Dhee.. I'm indian and fluent in Hindi thanks to the parentals. But carry on.
