Check this out if you have the time. We have to understand what we are becomeing, before we turn into the powerhouse international bully that years of properganda have told us to fight. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article3441.htm
Way back in 1988, on the 3rd of July, the U.S.S. Vincennes, a missile cruiser stationed in the Persian Gulf, accidentally shot down an Iranian airliner and killed 290 civilian passengers. George Bush the First, who was at the time on his presidential campaign, was asked to comment on the incident. He said quite subtly, "I will never apologize for the United States. I don't care what the facts are." The first paragraph is a LIE, so why read on? What a crap speech!
JH...are you saying that the Vincennes did not shoot down the Iranian airliner or are you saying that George I did not say what is listed above? Please clarify.
Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying. I hate it when writers say that someone said something "subtly" or "to the effect of" and then proceed to put quote marks around it. Shouldn't quote marks be reserved for something someone actually said, word for word?
dude, its ppl like you that dismiss that FACTS, that are blind and ignorant to logic that create soo many problems that this article addresses. ok so i guess everyone has to trust u and ur knowledge of EVERYTHING bush has ever said. thats pretty crappy. Why read the rest? cause you know its true and you cant admit it. But to PROVE ur error, here are some links to the story. http://www.democraticunderground.com/articles/02/05/14_bushmen.html But not more than his daddy ever did. Remember the Highway of Death in Kuwait? And Remember the U.S.S. Vincennes? Don't remember that one? The Iranians do. On July 3 of 1988, Iran Air's Flight 655, on a regularly scheduled flight from Bandar Abbas to Dubai, was shot down over the Persian Gulf by trigger-happy gunners on the Vincennes. The 290 people aboard died. Did President George Herbert Walker Bush cry? Certainly not. "I will never apologize for the United States of America," he said. "I don't care what the facts are." So Lieutenant Commander Scott Lustig, anti-air warfare officer of the Vincennes, was awarded two Navy commendation medals for his service on the cruiser. And its commander, Captain Will C. Rogers III, got the Legion of Merit for "exceptionally meritorious conduct during the period of his command." here is a couple quote websites. http://www.ruminatethis.com/archives/000518.html http://www.maller.com/quotes/?xauth=George+Bush just admit to ur error and please read the article with an open mind. you cant watch a movie with a preinclined idea that it will be bad. and trust that a world renowned author that spoke in front of 3000 ppl does not make up her information. have a nice day.
BRANMan, Please don't get snippy. I speak as a lefty here, and a lefty that has seen Ms. A. Roy speak on a number of occasions. While I agree with most of her politics, I have witnessed her playing fast and loose with facts before. She is a wonderful writer, a treasure, but when she gets political, she sounds very arrogant and self-righteous -- anything but open-minded, a trait which you rightly request of people here. Again, I agree with her stance on many issues, but usually not her rhetoric or methods. To be fair to our colleagues here from other parts of the political spectrum, sources are routinely dismissed in this forum if they obviously emanate from the far right or far left. If we accept Roy's speech as factually accurate... then we will similarly have to accept... treeman?
I can't believe it took the Vice President nearly two months to comment on the situation. (and someone needs to tell Democratic Underground to properly reflect that GHWB was VP at the time of the Vincennes incident and not the President. The way their story is written, it appears they are saying he was the President at that time). For the record, the Chicago Tribune didn't report the quote in any story on August 28th or thereabouts, even though, according to one of the quote sites posted, he made the comments on a campaign stop in Chicago the day before. The Trib didn't have the quote at all, as a matter of fact, and their online archives go back to 1985.
Branmann, George H.W. Bush delivered the official U.S. apology to the United Nations concerning the Vincennes tragedy. He was Vice President at the time, and I watched the speech live. He was elegant, eloquent, and remorseful. Your quote is a lie.
Yawn... More lunatic fringe liberal filth. Desparation has set in. There's no telling what types of lies and exaggerations they'll be pulling out after Dean wins the primary. It's truly hopeless for the liberal left. Sigh
Nobody would have thought Clinton had a chance at this point in his first campaign either. I'm not saying I am for or against Dean; he's kinda all over the map at this point. But he does seem to project the kind of charisma that could separate him from the otherwise indistiguishable democratic herd. If I were wagering in London he could be the best bet given his longshot odds.
