At this point I'd say he's among the most underappreciated players I've ever seen play the game.

It seems he just fell off the face of the earth... :(

    Congratulations, indeed.

Also, weren't the Astros courting him about signing up with us before the Minute Maid / Enron / Union Station ballpark days?

That's what happens when you come to Cincinnati.

He had a few rough years just after he got here but the last couple he has been doing better.

He wants to retire in Seattle.

It's just sad that his 600th homerun was in front of such a piddly crowd in Florida.

At least if he had gotten it here in Cincy he would have had a little bigger crowd. ;)

the hating on him that occured (particularly from Jim Rome) during those injury riddled season was over the top. sure, he said some things that were typical of spoiled athletes, but com on, there are alot more hatable guys than griffey jr. the guy just wants to go and play.

I agree. At one time the guy couldn't sneeze without the cameras being around him. I think it made the game less fun for him.

that's what happens when you go to play in a city who's been a doormat of the league for the past 10 years.

did you guys see the homer? looked like the one historic homerun ball that a fan could have gone to the game with a good chance of grabbing. right off the right field pole, with about 20 fans in the vicinity and a sea of open seats for it to fall into. gotta love marlins fans.

If he could have stayed healthy Griffey would have about 2154 home runs by now.

I believe had he not suffered those injuries he would have the all-time home run record.....without the controversy. He's a good one.

hah. we just make like the same exact post.

i've gotta say, the florida marlins gets my vote for the most fascinating franchise, possibly in sports history, for so many reasons. cracks me up.

I honestly believe he wasn't juicing when everyone else was, which makes my hate for Bonds even more because Juicing is supposed to help you recover more quickly from injuries. Imagine Griffey recovering quickly. This thread would be [800] Griffey.

Don't you guys have some non-playoff streak going on? I bet that's why the Reds' management decided to bring him in... and the money was good... but... I don't think I've heard of Reds' playoff games in a while...

Yeah I don't think we have technically been in the playoffs since I was a senior in high school.. that was 95

We almost made it as a wild card in 1999 I think it was, but we had a one game playoff with the Yankees and lost.

Edit: wait.. maybe it wasn't the Yankees... I can't remember.. gotta go look it up.

Edit2: It was the Mets... I knew it was one of those darn NY teams (but then I realized it couldn't have been the Yankees because of the whole AL NL thing ;))

A pretty amazing feat, but definitely under the radar...Granted he hasn't done nearly as great as in Seattle, but 600 is no joke...

Griffey is great. One of the only controversies surrounding him was wearing his hat backwards in batting practice.

It's really a shame that he had all of those injuries. Would've been nice to see someone have the home run record who deserves it and played the game the right way.

He is one of the main reasons I started wearing my hat backwards back in the day and I never stopped. He was my favorite player along with Bagwell at the time. I have almost every rookie card he had.

So many people don't realize it but if he had stayed healthy we would not be sitting here talking about Bonds. Griffey would have left Bonds in his dust at the rate he was going. Unfortunately for him he got injured a lot and had his chances taken away. Griffy was amazing right off of the bat not like Barry who took a while to come around.

I have no doubt in my mind Griffey would be holding the record if not for the injuries.

Any chance of him still beating Bond's record?

some buddies and i were taking a trip down memory lane about baseball cards, and were having a debate over how valuable his Upper Deck rookie got at its peak.

some were arguing that it got like between $300-400. i thought it got to like 100 max.

    do you remember?

With out those injuries, he should be around 750.

I was listening to sporting news radio on my way home from the concert, and they said he missed a total of about 3 and a half seasons.

Yeah, his first season in cincy he played around 100 games, the next two seasons I doubt he played in 100 total. Then he came back the fourth season and played maybe the last half?

The fans here in Cincinnati were NOT nice to him. He was supposed to come in and be our savior, but instead he was hobbled with injuries.

The last two years he has been good... playing most games.. but they were saying the other day during the game how easily he could have been waiting to hit 700 instead of 600 if he had stayed healthy
