Doesn't seem like long ago that Roger got the 300th win, but he has managed to add another 47 wins on the list. The amazing thing is that if he wanted to.... he seriously could probably pass a palyer like Warren Spahn if he pitched another year... or even Grover Alexander in two years.. Amazing that he actually is within striking distance of the top 3.. never thought I'd see someone get that close. He is expected to retire this year.. probably around 350 wins.. Just thought it was interesting how far he has jumped up the list in the last couple of years. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/pitching/piwins2.shtml
I should say he will finish around 350 wins.. if he gets enough run support to get him 3 more wins.. which isn't a given! if we had given him some decent run support he'd probably be well over 350 by now..
Did you say within strking distance of the top 3? Cy Young at 511, Walter Johnson at 417 and Grover Alexander at 373. Not even close to the top 2. About 12 years to catch up to Young, and 5 to catch Johnson. 2.5 years away from Alexander. He'll get over 350 for sure. We'll see what 07 brings.
I meant striking distance of number 3. If he finishes this year with 350.. he'd be 23 away from number 3 (Grover Alexander ).. which as well as he still pitches... he could probably get 23 wins with no problem in 2 seasons .. (11.5 wins a year, for 2 years). I'm not saying I expect him to at all, I'm just saying it is really impressive that he seems like he is pitching at this high of a level still and could get to 373 if he really wanted to hang around.
Once again.. he could get 373 in two years.. as long as he got some decent run support As long as he didn't totally break down and start pitching a lot worse than he does now.
He's 13 games away. It's money in the bank. Wanna wager? Biggio at 3,000 hits and Glavine at 300 in '07. Book it!
On the flipside, he benefitted from great run support and got a lot of extra wins when he was simply a good but not great pitcher for the Yankees.
you're probably right. i just heard about his potentially career-threatening injury the other day and thought about our conversation. glad he's coming back...seems like a good guy...even if he does play for the Mets.
major.. I haven't looked at his run support over the years, but you are probably right about that.... players with the yanks, etc often get tons of run support and wins that they might lose for other teams.
I'm primarily remembering one year where I think he something like 8th or 9th in ERA in the AL but had a ridiculous W/L record and won a Cy-Young due to that. I don't know about other years, but I imagine just playing with the Yankees that he likely had absurdly high run support in general. Although, looking at the stats, outside of that one year (20-3 in 2001 with 3.5 ERA), he didn't have absurd wins with the Yankees for the most part. Strangely, he won at least 19 games only 6 times in his 21 year career. Roy O has done it 3 times in 6 years - makes you really appreciate what we've got in him!
