Am I the only one who didn't think The Fighter was amazing? It seems like if you want to win movie awards, make a boxing movie. Ali and Million Dollar Baby are just 2 that come to mind. Bale did an excellent job in that movie, but I still think Geoffery Rush was INCREDIBLE. The Kings Speech deserves all the love it can get. I enjoyed Inception, but I don't think it stacks up to The Kings Speech.
I don't like it, either... But... maybe 'cuz I haven't seen it and I hate anything that has Christian I'm-done-with-you-professionally Bale. Just make a BOXING movie, eh?
I think King's Speech will win big. The problem with Inception was that it wasn't bad compared to the other movies but overly complex. I don't think the old people who comprise these movie nominations really got this film. I'm in my 20's and I didn't even really get the film either.
I agree, I really enjoyed True Grit, and I think it is worthy of a nomination. I also saw Inception, but I was rather disappointed.
Recent Oscar trend suggest the academy likes films dealing with the present. Plus, people are accustomed to Harvey Weinstein's tactics and in some case are using them against him. Like when he allegedly leaked info about the authenticity of Saving Private Ryan to score a win for Shakespeare In Love. Now some stories (The Guardian) are surfacing about King George VI indifference towards the Jews during the Holocaust. Coincidence? I think not. This is a pretty accurate four part description about the Oscars and Award season. Link True Grit is going to win IMHO. Better movie, likability, and American.
True Grit has more heart and soul in its first five minutes than in the 2:30 hrs of Inception. The Coen Bros. don't need a gimmick and $200 million dollars to make a damn good movie.
So you think the fact these old people have decades more experience than you in life and in the actual movie-making industry is a handicap for them in understanding the movie? But, I agree it was overly complex. I think Nolan did a good job building out the internal logic of the movie and it made it rather poignant during the movie. But, there was too much suspension of disbelief, too much made-up stuff to make the story go. Looking back at the movie months later, the poignancy is gone and my primary memories are (1) the pedantry of these layers of dreaming and (2) 'why are people always shooting guns in these dreams again?' So, I'd say good direction, bad screenwriting.
A curious accusation since this remake and book adaptation is an exception to the rule. Most of their movies they wrote the original screenplay for, and winning awards for their writing to boot.
I really dont get the "more heart" post, there was very little originality to True Grit. I kept hearing about how it was a different interpretation from the original but there were very few differences. I did not like the original either, for the record. I found both incredibly dull and boring. Bridges' and Damon's characters were so stereotypical to the point that I found them annoying. The only redeeming quality to the movie for me was the performance of Hailee Steinfeld who was great (and much much better than the girl in the original). Otherwise, I found myself dozing off during scenes. I am definitely not a Coen Brother fan (I find them quite overrated), but this is definitely one of their weaker films. Not as bad as Burn After Reading, but that was one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
I'm not ripping on No Country for Old Men or Fargo because I found both of those movies to be outstanding. I even enjoyed True Grit. However, I think Nolan should have been nominated over them in this case. Doesn't really matter because Fincher is going to win it anyway.
A lot of people would disagree with you. The Coens are perhaps this generation's best American filmmakers based on their body of work.
I just listen to the Soundtrack to Tron Legacy in my car for the 10th time and I came to a conclusion that it sounded exactly like the Dark Knight/Inception score, I **** you not, LOL...
The Oscar has always been a joke and this had nothing to do with Daft Punk. The Oscar is just a joke like the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
