If your primary was held today, for whom would you vote?

Please only vote in this poll if you're likely to vote in a Democratic primary.

Candidates are listed alpha by last name. The poll only allows ten options, so I included the ten most likely candidates and didn't have room for longshots like Al Gore or Al Sharpton.

If I was an American I think I’d go with Obama.

Voted for Clark, but Gore would be my first choice.

Trader Jorge is a democrat?

Well technically since I'm not registered with the party I guess I can't vote in the primary. But if I was, OBAMA would be the choice!

My vote, as of today, goes enthusiastically to Obama. That could change. As it stands, I'd take any Democrat in this poll over any Republican in the other -- with the possible exception of Chuck Hagel over a couple of my bottom tier Dem choices.

I rank the Dems in this order, according to preference:

    1. Obama
    2. Edwards
    3. Clark
    4. Richardson
    5. Dodd
    6. Vilsack
    7. Biden
    8. Clinton
    9. Kerry
    10. Kucinich

Kucinich would be way higher in my list if I thought he had any chance -- and Kerry would be a few notches higher if I thought he had a chance too. But I don't see either of those guys being elected over a serious GOP candidate. Hillary's low on my list because I'm sick of her equivocating over the war, but I think she'd be a very strong candidate and a very good president.

I'd encourage anyone who can't vote in a primary (like Grizzled) or can't currently vote in a primary (like mc mark) or is on the fence (like Max) to go ahead and vote. I'm not looking for a scientific read on how BBS votes will impact actual primaries (since they really won't) -- just taking the temperature of the board and trying to avoid trolls from other parties from skewing the results. I'm inclined to go to the GOP thread and vote Hagel, for instance, but I won't because I want to know how righties here are leaning.

mc mark: Register, man. This primary matters. You can always go back to indy status after the primary, but we all know you'll vote Dem in 08 and there's a great chance that the race will be contested through the NY primary.

More of a tongue-in-cheek vote. Hilary is a looong shot at winning the presidency.

I hope she's not the eventual nominee as there are other Dem candidates I'd prefer and at least two to three Dems that I think have a better shot, but that's just flat wrong. Hillary would be a very, very strong candidate.

Fair enough. I'm glad we've got a couple candidates you'd consider. The poll's open indefinitely so if you start leaning one way or another come back and let us know.

..but she would lose the general election against any of the Republicans running, and that is why I do not want her to win the nomination. Too many negatives.

One of my business partners has voted Republican most of his life. He said the other day he was really encouraged about 2008, because he felt the Dems were gonna run someone he could really get behind. That and the whole, "please stop using my faith as your political platform for things I don't want to be associated with" are driving his vote.

I will definitely let you know. Any help on why I should choose one over the other would be good too!!! I voted in the Dem primary last time. I voted for Edwards. I lost. :)

That was the conventional wisdom six months ago, but it's outdated. The top tier of the GOP candidates each have serious problems that are not yet in the public consciousness.

McCain's numbers have been dropping steadily since he came out for the surge. Reversing his position on the religious right and warming up to Falwell as well as backing off his anti-terror ultimatum has hurt the idea of him being a "straight talker." And his clear attempts to be the inheritor of the Bush mantle have hurt his reputation as a "maverick." Further, any attachment to Bush in 08 currently looks like much more of a negative than a plus.

Giuliani hasn't been subject to any scrutiny whatsoever and I strongly believe that when he is he will plummet in the estimation of most GOP voters. As such, I don't see him getting out of the primary. In fact, I can even imagine a situation in which he doesn't run, though I think he will. I will say though that, apart from Hagel (whom I also think wouldn't get the nod), he would be the toughest to beat.

Romney takes "flip-flopping" to a new level. He's currently running as the most anti-gay candidate after swearing he was more pro-gay rights than Ted Kennedy (shades of basso) and his bid to be the conservative candidate in the race is rife with hypocrisy wrt past positions. His abortion stances have been all over the board, the gay thing mentioned above, the quote that "I don't really identify with the NRA" coupled with his current membership in same, etc.

Huckabee could be a tough candidate, believable to social conservatives and likeable enough.

Brownback and Tancredo are too extreme to compete with any Dem right of Kucinich.

Meanwhile, Hillary has won many converts among the independents and moderate Republicans that have gotten to know her in her state and among Republicans in the Senate.

I understand the broad idea that she's unlikeable to a lot of voters and it has a lot of basis in fact but she has damned expectations over and over again and it would be a big mistake to write her off or even to consider her a longshot at this point.

I don't know... Hagel intrigues me. ;) You're right about the New York primary this time. But the wife has already signed us both up to volunteer for Obama when he opens up his New York office. So unless he does something really crazy, he's our man.

As the race gets going it's a sure bet I'll have something to say about why you should choose one over the other, but I think they're both excellent candidates and I wouldn't try to sway you from either to the other. My personal preference is Obama because he is an incredible speaker and writer (as Chris Matthews says, "And he can write! None of these guys can write, but he can write!") -- and the fact that he is the primary writer of his own stuff when that virtually never happens goes to the fact that he is truly speaking his mind which goes to integrity. I also think he's inspirational in a very rare way and his call to a new kind of politics is sincere, believable and saleable. I just find him exciting in a way that no serious candidate for president (apart from, in a far lower grade way, Howard Dean -- whose message was angry rather than optimistic and therefore less saleable) has been in my lifetime. Like crazy.

All that gives him the edge for me over Edwards, but I'd be ecstatic if Edwards was the nominee too. And the above is just an explanation of my current feelings, not an attempt to sway you. I'm really looking forward to a primary battle between several candidates I could totally get behind, even if I do have a current favorite.

I voted for Obama. Because he is black. I feel that Black is back, all in, we're gonna win.

They both seem sincere. I'm just so skeptical of politicians, in general. I don't like being like that, but it comes with experience.
