Let's put it this way, I'd rather support a candidate who was backed by the Heritage Foundation, or the Olin foundation rather than one from some Eco-Front, Human Rights Campaign for gay people) person.

It's not forcing political views, its saying if you are in an occasion of sin or support something that is viewed as sinful in the church, you are not preparing yourself adequeatly to recieve the Eucharist. This is completely apolitical from the Church's viewpoint.

Nope. I can be against abortion, and for a LAW that that allows it for reasons I have discussed before. It is completely political and repugnant.

That's totally cool. I just don't see how the Heritage Foundation has sole rights to "family values."

I'm a bleeding-heart liberal and I put family first in all my decisions. Children should grow up in a loving, nurturing environment. Isn't that a family value?

I don't buy that argument. That would be like me saying I'm against murder, but I support a law that allows for people to murder.

I'd totally agree they should grow up in a great environment, that's part and parcel of a family value. But there are other things as well, what kind of culture actually provides a good environment, a culture of death like the one we have now or a culture of life.

And that's just where Liberals and Conservatives differ and I'm completely cool with that. Conservatives certain things that seem "loving" actually take one further away from true love; say things like p*rnography, having a healthy sex life, etc. etc. and they know that children have to be taught what's right and wrong in some things. Liberals don't agree with these things and that's fine. I'm voting for the politician that goes along with what I want supported.

That's awesome. You seem like a responsible person who's doing what you feel is best for your family.

I guess I just have a problem with the political branding involved with some of these terms. "Family values" is such a loaded phrase, politically. But as long as a child grows up in a loving, nurturing home, political ideas really don't matter.

It's completely fair to say what I said. Anyone who can't see right through Bush and his production company must have a mental block of some kind.

I watch p*rnography WITH my wife as part of our "healthy sex life." Who the he!! are you to make a judgement about what we want to do in bed?

So now liberals don't want to teach their children right from wrong?!?! You are totally whacko, dude.

I'm against people talking while they're chewing their food, but I definitely support a law that allows them to do so.

The whole point of the argument is that meowgi is drawing a distinction between personal beliefs/preferences and social rules. Whether the distinction still holds in certain cases (abortion, to use the example) is debateable, but it's hardly a logically inconsistent argument.

I'm sure you dislike lots of behavior that you wouldn't want to be prohibited by the law.

You really misconstrued that post to mean what you wanted it to mean.

I was saying how that's great Liberals and Conservatives have different ideas, do what you want with your wife I don't care; I'm not voting for people who support that type of behavior as normal. I don't think thats a great behavior and probably illustrates some deeper problems, butI'm not going to speculate or judge because thats not my place. But I'm not voting for people who think that way...or want to teach children that thats the way to be.

But in the case of abortion, I believe it to be murder, do I sit back and let it be allowed?

    First, you speculate and judge.

Then you claim it is not your place to speculate and judge.

And then you further disparage by insinuating that I would expose my children to p*rnography.

    Keep digging, dude.

You certainly should not attempt to force YOUR PERSONAL BELIEFS on someone else through legislation.

But once again, this thread is not about abortion.
