"The Orlando Magic obtained a future first-round pick from the Detroit Pistons by agreeing Friday to defer until 3 a.m. today a decision on whether to exercise an option to take this year's No. 18 pick from Phoenix. As part of a multiple-team exchange, Detroit likely would have received the pick from Vancouver and didn't want it this year.

If the Pistons wait, they will get Vancouver's No. 1 pick in 2002 if it is not in the top six. The deadline for the Vancouver-Detroit exchange was 3 a.m. today.

The conditional first-round pick from Detroit was the one it obtained from Toronto, which got it from Orlando in the sign-and-trade that landed Tracy McGrady. The Pistons have until 2004 to send the pick to Orlando, and the conditions change yearly.

The Magic today still are expected to exercise the option on that 18th pick, then send it to Houston for future considerations. The Magic still have the Nos. 15 and 23 picks this year."

"WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR: Dumars received a fax from the Vancouver Grizzlies late Friday indicating that the Pistons won't be receiving a first-round draft pick this year as compensation from the 1997 Otis Thorpe trade.

Vancouver had until midnight to tell the Pistons whether they would receive compensation this year.

The Pistons could get as high as the No. 6 pick in the draft next year, depending on where the Grizzlies' pick falls. The conditional draft pick is protected up to No. 5.

If Vancouver doesn't give Detroit the pick until 2003, the Pistons could get as high as the No. 2 pick, if that's where the Grizzlies land in the lottery. The pick is protected up to No. 1 in '03."

    "for future considerations"?

The Rockets better not be sending Orlando jack crap for that pick - the Magic owe it to us.

From what I have read Orlando owes a lot of teams picks. If there are fututre conisderations, I hope we can send them Wiz for Miller.

Since Vancouver has lost its 1st round pick for next year, the year of their first draft in the city of Memphis, can't they just do a few trades to pick up some 1st rounders for next year? Possible a mid round pick to send to Detroit? or does Detroit get their pick, no matter what?

Who wants to bet, if they are close to the bottom of the conference next year, they tank a few games to make sure they are guaranteed #4 or #5 to protect their pick?

I was told that it has to be their own pick. As far as the thought of tanking...

I understand ya, Clutch. Someone posted in another of these threads (and I'm too lazy to go hunt it down) that maybe getting the higher #18 pick rather than the #23 pick might be why there's a future consideration involved?

"Hey, guys, give us the #18 pick instead of #23 and we'll send you a future 2nd-rounder and, er, a bag of Chee-Tos---a BIG bag---and we'll low-ball Hakeem so that he decides to take your 4.5 million exception; what do you say?"
