01) Bad Brains was one of the best (and first) hardcore bands. Top five, at least. 02) Everything up through Quickness is good. 03) HR's antics have no bearing on the band's importance in the evolution of hardcore. 04) I don't like a lot of grindcore, but the good grind bands are really good. 05) The Who > The Rolling Stones 06) The only great Pink Floyd album is Piper at the Gates of Dawn 07) Black Flag and Bad Brains are on equal footing. 08) Led Zeppelin has contributed nothing of any value to music except for heaps of plagiarized blues riffs, sloppy guitar playing, hysterical, shrieking vocals, lyrics that alternate between arrested adolescent sexuality and a lot of blather about elves and fairies, and a seriously overrated rhythm section. 09) Black Sabbath has exerted more influence than just about any other rock band of the last 35 years. 10) Deep Purple was good. 11) Dr. Know is good, but can't be placed in the same category as Hendrix, who redefined the instrument. 12) Listen to Devo.
Man, how could I forget Sum 41. Maybe I haven't gotten over them beating us in baseball. I will not listen to devo.
You have absolutely no freaking clue what you're talking about. Because of point #8, everything you've said in this thread or will ever say again in this thread is totally wrong, bogus, way off, null and void - take your pick. Never been a truer example of blasphemy.
Yes - agree. Uh...no I will give you that Zeppelin was somewhat shameless in ripping off the blues but that is about all I'll give you. Queen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica, Rush, etc. would disagree with you on the "nothing of any value" and are you freaking insane about saying that John Bonham was overrated?? Tell you what, crack - you play the drum part on "Achilles Last Stand" and let me know how easy it was, LOL. Actually agree with both of these although "Stormbringer" is a somewhat tedious album at times. I don't know much about your other points; I may have to do 12 of my own but it is too late in the day to do it now.
#1 - Don't know who they are. #2 - Don't want to come too quickly. Gotta agree with that! #3 - His Royal what?? #4 - I like to grind it in bed. #5 - I love the Who, and have seen both bands several times. The Rolling Stones are the greatest rock and roll band, ever. The Who are right up there with them. #6 - The only great Floyd LP?? I think not! #7 - If you spray too much Black Flag around, no doubt you'll get your bad brains. #8 - Run, don't walk, to the nearest mental institution and check yourself in. NOW. #9 - Did you get some bad acid? #10 - Deep Purple was damn good. I saw them as well. #11 - I saw Jimi four times. No one will ever be his equal. #12 - Whip It is a great tune. I can imagine Kramer dancing to it on Seinfeld.
You're pretty far off base in regards to Zeppelin aside from their tendency to "borrow." Their stuff is just as canonical to modern heavy rock and metal bands as Sabbath's. And while Geezer/Ward were certainly awesome, they suffer for the comparison to Bonham/Jones. I like grindcore too! I especially like the bands that really blur the line between grind and death, like Napalm D, Pig Destroyer and the Locust.
I've heard many a rocksnob admit how good Blink 182 are in a whisper. 8) Question your judgment here. Need to loosen up a little and enjoy some sloppy guitar riffs. One of my favorite Onion articles of all time... Teen Who Just Discovered Led Zeppelin Starting to Piss Off Friends "In addition to naming his '91 Prelude the "Honda Of The Holy" and renaming his cat of four years "Bonzo" as an homage to late Led Zeppelin drummer John "Bonzo" Bonham, Campa has irritated friends with his constant barrage of Led Zeppelin trivia." 12) Agree. Highly underrated. Mark Mothersbaugh also does a great job producing all of Wes Anderson's soundtracks.
Harsh Truth #1 None of the 12 truths originally posted in this thread have any meaning or significance to me. Maybe someday I'll find out. Harsh Truth #2 Punk blows chunks. Harsh Truth #3 Ska is crap too.
01) Bad Brains was one of the best (and first) hardcore bands. Top five, at least. < I'm good with this. Maybe not my top 5 of the genre, but close enough> 02) Everything up through Quickness is good. < Yeah, ok> 03) HR's antics have no bearing on the band's importance in the evolution of hardcore. <You obviously care more than I> 04) I don't like a lot of grindcore, but the good grind bands are really good. < I'll take your word for it > 05) The Who > The Rolling Stones <I've always liked the Who better. They really lit up the Stones in RnR Circus> 06) The only great Pink Floyd album is Piper at the Gates of Dawn < One could go further with that line of thinking and say the greatest Pink Floyd lps are Syd Baretts solos, but I'll just say I like Meddle, Ummagumma and DSOM more than any of the others > 07) Black Flag and Bad Brains are on equal footing. < I like the Bad Brains better, but Black Flag get's more pub. Their So Cal scene was better hyped than the DC one> 08) Led Zeppelin has contributed nothing of any value to music except for heaps of plagiarized blues riffs, sloppy guitar playing, hysterical, shrieking vocals, lyrics that alternate between arrested adolescent sexuality and a lot of blather about elves and fairies, and a seriously overrated rhythm section. <Now you've gone and done it. The very idea of calling Jimmy (weenie fingers) Page a sloppy guitar player. Well, he kinda was sloppy live (often very) but he knew how to tweak it in the studio and took what he ripped from blues artist and went in for the kill. I've never equated technical proficiency with good guitar playing - anything but. And yes, Plant was a halter wearing whiny baby. Bonzo may possibly be the best drummer ever. LZ is ok with me. 09) Black Sabbath has exerted more influence than just about any other rock band of the last 35 years. <Even if you stretch their influence to everything goth it seems unlikely. I'd like to hear your reasoning on this. BTW, Toni Iommi is even a sloppier guitar player than weenie fingers. What with his plastic finger tips and all it's a wonder he can play at all 10) Deep Purple was good. <I liked them when I was 16-21 yo> 11) Dr. Know is good, but can't be placed in the same category as Hendrix, who redefined the instrument. < yes > 12) Listen to Devo. <Mr Meowgi thanks you >
Okay, I thought about this thread and I have come up with my own "12 Truths" but unlike crack, I am not going to proclaim these to be the gospel - just my opinion. 1 – Roxy Music is the most underrated, influential band that the US has never heard of 2 – Despite being ragged on by critics, Queen’s albums, “A Kind of Magic”, “The Miracle” and “Innuendo” are all severely underrated 3 – Pink Floyd’s “Animals” is the better album compared to “Wish You Were Here” 4 – No artist had the string of consecutive brilliant albums like Bob Dylan did in “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” to “John Wesley Harding” (a total of 7 straight great albums) 5 – The Cars, Boston, The Stone Roses, and Pearl Jam are all in contention for the greatest rock debut album ever 6 – With the exception of one album apiece for each, the ‘80s were extremely rough times for Bowie, Dylan, and Young as you have to be a diehard fan to buy AND listen to those albums. 7 – The Rolling Stones’ classic quartet of albums (“Beggars’ Banquet”, “Let It Bleed”, “Sticky Fingers”, and “Exile on Main Street”) were enough to make them one of rock’s greatest bands ever, which is a good thing as they have pretty much mailed it in on every album since then (with the exception being “Some Girls” and “Tattoo You”). 8 – Despite being one of the best bands today, Coldplay’s debut album is still their best as the ones that have come after it have not shown much growth artistically (the band has continued to go the safe route and use the same formula but with minor tweaking) 9 – Genesis and Talk Talk are 2 bands that have had the greatest transformation in their sound – going from one extreme to the other. 10 – The Beatles’ pre-“Rubber Soul” material is vastly underrated compared to their other stuff 11 – The Cure need to call it a career as their last solid studio album was 13 years ago in “Wish” (writing this one was very tough for me!) 12 – Three artists that never get the recognition they deserve are T.Rex, Joy Division, and Nick Drake
