While standing, stretch your ankle one way like if your standing on your toes. Then the other way, like if your standing on your heels. You'll notice your knees will respond by flexing or extending. That's one relationship between those 2 joints. Your muscle movements are all connected in some way, so the problem could be starting at the knees and affecting you down to your ankles...or vice versa. It could even be further way, like from hip to ankle, or even from shoulder to ankle. It varies. The point is to not narrow your focus on just your ankle. What you see as weak ankles may just be your body relaxing the ankle joint in response to a stiff joint elsewhere. It does this automatically to protect itself from injury that may occur. Its balancing itself out in a way, so trying to strengthen, tape, or brace the ankles may not be helpful or even a good thing.
