That's such great logic. Why care about the present that included the best center in the NBA and one of top wing players in the NBA when you can build for 4-5 years down the road? I mean, anyone knows that you want to wait til Yao and T-Mac were in their 30s before trying to win.

Rudy Gay for Battier was 1 for 1 trade. Keeping Gay wouldn't have made our bench any better. Because 1=1.

It was an understandable trade at the time, unfortunately it didn't work out how the Rockets would have hoped.

Even with the benefit of hindsight, I wouldn't call it a bad trade, but it was tilted towards the Grizzlies favor.

It was a decent trade at the time...Though I was pissed, it made sense...Plus Gay wouldnt have been half the player he is now, if he had stayed... We're not really known for developing young talent into stardom.... Some exceptions of course ... Most wing players we draft turn out to be end of bench players eventually

Gay is ok. But an ok player who happens to dunk hard is still just ok.

Note both the Rudy Gay pick and the Lowry pick in that draft involved Memphis.

Imagine this single trade that could have gone down at the 24th pick:

Memphis trades Battier and the 24th pick (Kyle Lowry)
Houston trades Rafer Alston and the rights to Rudy Gay

We get Battier as before plus get rid of Alston and groom Lowry much faster than Memphis did.

I remember once, when we took a 19 year old (technically traded for his rights) with a top 10 pick. This guy had amazing potential, and was a perfect fit for our team. That player was Eddie Griffin.

    It was the right move.

This is a simple fact that's overlooked way too often, Gay's nothing special.

He is better than anyone else on our team BY FAR

He was the third best player on a team that went on to be the 8th seed. Minus Gay, plus Battier, they then went on to beat the Spurs in round 1, and come up just short of beating the Thunder in the 2nd.

On the plus side, he only costs max dollars to be the team's 3rd best player.

    Lowry > Gay

I'd actually say Martin = Gay

Gay is more talented than any player on our roster, but doesn't get the most out of his talent.

    Lowry is far better.

Also, Gay has a max contract.

From a certain perspective, teh trade looks better in hindsight than it did then.

if somebody told you that night that Yao/Tracy had about 3-4 years left, after which they would break down and no longer be franchise players, would you take Gay and wait....(or Sefaloshfa, who they would have ended up with...)...or would you go "win now!" with Battier....?

It is a well known fact that we wouldn't have selected Rudy Gay. We would have drafted Thabo Sefolosha.

I would pay Rudy max money because the guy can take over a game... He's a game changer with every skill set.. If he didn't have so many other good options(Gasol, Randolph, Mayo even Conley) he'd easily be over 20ppg.. The trade stinks pretty bad now, but worse things have happend to franchises..

Whats interesting is Sefolosha is Battier lite. He is a defensive player, who hasn't shot the 3-ball as well as Battier.

And so could Starbury in his prime...

Heck, he'd even throw in 10 assists.

Every skill set, except for rebounding and passing.
