If you look at a season in retrospect, you shouldn't be in the running for MVP if you didn't take your team to the finals. What would be the point of doing a "player of the year" voting if you don't look at the YEAR the players have had? Does he have amazing individual skills and might eventually be seen as one of the best, if not the best ever? Sure. Is he player of the year? Hell no.
